Understanding Your Insurance: Co-Pays vs. Coinsurance Navigating your insurance can feel overwhelming. At Irby Psychological Services, we want to make sure you’re well-informed and empowered to take care of your mental well-being without added stress. FYI: We see all ages for counseling, and we understand that oftentimes parents will seek services for their children, neglecting their own counseling needs for later. However, counseling may not be as expensive as you think (depending on your insurance) and taking care of your own mental health will help you with your child's mental well-being. Copays: -What it is: A fixed amount you pay for a specific service, examples some individuals may pay a $25 copay for services. -How it works: You pay this amount at the time of the service. It’s straightforward and predictable. -Example: If you see a psychologist, counselor, speech therapist, or occupational therapist at our office and your copay is $25, you pay $25 at the visit, regardless of the total cost of the appointment. Co-Insurance: -What it is: A percentage of the cost of a service that you pay after your deductible has been met. For instance, 20% of the total bill. Note: Sometimes with coinsurance you owe 100% until the deductible is met and THEN the coinsurance amount is applied. -How it works: You pay a percentage of the total charges for the service. This means costs can vary based on the total amount of the bill. -Example: If you have a 20% coinsurance and the contracted rate with your insurance for the service provided was $200, you would pay $40 (20% of $200), with your insurance covering the remaining $160 if your deductible is met.
