For those tax practitioners who are CPAs there has always been an unfair playing field on CPAs advertising, versus tax professionals in general. Tax professionals are unrestricted, able to make claims, as we can get you the highest refunds, at a minimum. But CPAs cannot make such claims. It appears that the AICPA and NATP have woken up and hopefully will address the disparity. Since I am not a tax practitioner, I hope all the CPAs who practice taxes can hold the AICPA and NATPs feet to the fire to help level the playing field. When Randy Crabtree, Hank Berkowitz, and I decided to dig into employee satisfaction in the #accounting profession, we realized we had certain ideas on why they change firms or just feel burnt out. A good CFO knows how to say NO. One of my favorite Winston Churchill quotes is: “Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.” I’ve often thought about this as I’ve had to say no to CEOs, founders, executives, attorneys, bankers, employees, and more. Financial leaders often get derogatory labels like “Party Pooper” and “Negative Nancy”. It makes sense to deny expenditures or initiatives that are baseless, pompous, or simply when cash is tight. But how you say it can make the difference, and keep your leadership power in tact. The best way to do this is by understanding what they want, and giving them a plan to achieve it within necessary parameters. Instead of saying no, qualify the yes. Tell them what must be true. It makes a world of difference.

It is comforting to see that HMT are taking their time over this and not “rushing to legislate” against so-called Umbrella Payroll Companies” (an almost impossible thing to define). Legislation/regulation is not a panacea, indeed legislation can often make things worse and can lead to some terrible miscarriages of justice c/f the Managed Service Legislation. Those posting churlish messages about “inaction” when the authorities are actually demonstrating appropriate due care on a sensitive and delicate matter would do well to research (for example) the history of legislation against Employment Agencies -beginning with the 1973 Employment Agencies Act (effectively reversed in 1994) and the new Act in 2003 (prohibiting the charging of fees) which is what really gave rise to the Umbrella Payroll industry-the regulator (the ESA) has an extraordinarily difficult task. The responses to the Umbrella Consultation last summer must have provided a complex array of new information for consideration (for example the My Digital response ran to 30 pages -DM me if you would like a copy) so one can understand the need for a considered approach. Why not post your response to the Consultation and be professional rather than post lazy and fatuous content? 🙏🏼

Here's an interesting use case for AI that I was working through yesterday (this one's for you Tom Zehentner, CPA). Our current setup integrates outstanding invoices from QuickBooks Online into our project management system, ClickUp, using Zapier. This gives our project managers visibility on overdue invoices and helps determine when to initiate the collections process. We've also created email templates in ClickUp for different stages of follow-up, becoming progressively more assertive over time. ClickUp allows us to manage billing through an integrated mailbox. You can easily add a template to an email within ClickUp and use AI to populate specific details like invoice dates and numbers to that template. We've even saved the AI prompt in ClickUp for quick access. This streamlined process has significantly reduced the time spent on each email from about 5 minutes to less than 30 seconds. It's a great example of how AI, standardization, and a bit of creative thinking can boost efficiency. #standardizingwithAI #AI #ClickUp
