What I'm Reading...

My wife gets the credit for super-charging my reading over the past year or so.

It started with me stopping reading altogether. I was sick of leadership, business, productivity, and other "boring" non-fiction books that has consumed my post college years, now half my life or so. I had not previously found them boring of course; I had spent north of a decade with my noses in the pages of classic reads from Peter Drucker and Steven Covey, to Jim Collins in the early 2000s, to modern reads in the early 2010s from business leaders and thinkers like Peter Thiel.

But I think I got tired of coming home and reading serious stuff just before bed. Nothing wrong with non-fiction, of course, but I wanted break. My wife was the obvious consultant... she had been reading 50 to 70 books a year for a few years at that point, probably half of those fiction. She prodded me to reintroduce fiction in my life.

I didn't know where to start, so I reverted back to my last long-term fiction writer I read, way back in my teenager years. Grisham and I about 30 years apart now, but I learned that he hasn't stopped writing, in fact he writes about a book a year now. I could sit here and write many words about his books, some are good, some are amazing. I'm sure there are some "blah" reads of his too, though I've only come across one, out of a dozen or so read in the last year.

But needless to say, that's how I got reading again. And after loads of fiction fun, I was ready to balance my diet back out again, and re-insert non-fiction reading into my diet as well. I plan to start sharing more here about what I'm reading and my thoughts on it -- particularly if I find something I highly recommend.

In the meantime, what are YOU reading right now? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!

I recently started Be Exceptional by Joe Navarro. He’s a former FBI agent who specialized in catching spies. He has a really interesting life story, an awesome skill set to share, and his content is engaging. This book is on his research into what traits and habits make a person exceptional.

The Code Breaker. All about RNA’s role to immunize against viruses. The MRNA work and CRISPR work for the coronavirus vaccines. Fascinating story focusing on Jennifer Doudna’s efforts. By Walter Isaacson

I just started doing this again this year. So right now am balancing my fun one of To Selena, With Love (am a big Selena fan) with Crucial Conversations.

“Boys in the boat” was a great read and believe George Clooney is producing a movie on it in the near future. story about US Mens olympic rowing team when Hitler was in power. Gives a great glimpse of the grit it took to grow up in that era.  Tim Grover’s “winning” was one that if you were a fan of MJ or Kobe you may be interested in reading it and how they took preparedness and mindset to the next level whether in sports or business.
