Monday! #perspective #iwd2024 #march It’s March. Every March I look around and see the slew of self-congratulatory messages that organizations and individuals make to commemorate themselves on Women’s Day. Harsh? Maybe. But please see my point - as trite as it may sound - Women’s Day is and should be – EVERYDAY. So, to start with: - Look to HIRE more women at your workplace. Help/mentor them. - PAY them better. - LISTEN to them. And not just to those female employees that agree with you/are the star performers at the workplace! - Build systems to support them when they go on maternity leave and for them to come back to work. - Organize workshops, training and skill development sessions to help them grow in a holistic manner. - Encourage them to SPEAK UP. - Support not just women, but also those who identify as women and non-binary individuals. Folks, DEI is no longer just a buzz word. These processes and the culture we seek to build cannot just be convenient. 📢 Breaking news! A company recently posted on social media that they hired a woman for a VP/GM role, touting their commitment to diversity and inclusion. They didn't do this for the right reasons, they did this to cover up their actions. ⤵ Behind the scenes, the same company has been accused of discrimination and lack of inclusivity by several employees who have spoken out, resulting in more employees leaving the company. It's important to remember that actions speak louder than words and that true commitment to diversity and inclusion requires more than just a social media post. On this International Women’s Day #iwd2024 I’m celebrating those on maternity leave from TTG Media at the moment. Without being complacent I thought I knew a little about supporting women in the workplace. I was the proud recipient of the AWTE (Association of Women Travel Executives) Ambassador award in December 2022, in recognition of encouraging, enabling and supporting women in business. But I have to confess that having five on maternity leave at the same time has given me a whole new perspective. I won’t pretend the current situation hasn’t raised some challenges. But I also know that it’s opened up new opportunities for others on the team, and for some more brilliant people to join the business. Step forward Sarah Dennis! But what’s most important to me is that those on maternity leave know that their careers aren’t frozen where they left them and that at our B Corp-accredited business they have every opportunity to continue to develop their career in the same way when they come back. When you want every member of your team to have a long career with the company, a year out of the business needn’t have a negative impact. And like so many businesses now following our Covid experiences, we’ve never been more flexible with our working practices. So many of us at TTG are in it for the long haul and all the team, female and male, will always be measured on results, not on presenteeism. On International Women's Day it’s important to remember that supporting women in business isn’t only about supporting women at work - it’s about supporting them when they’re not working too.
