Amazon's Q2 earnings didn't quite tick all of Wall Street's boxes. The company beat on earnings and met expectations for AWS revenue (an area investors were keenly interested in), but that was overshadowed by a revenue miss and disappointing guidance. Uber is gracefully entering the new #GenAI era, scaling multimodal data 🤖 Explore Uber’s journey with Zhitao Li, director of engineering, AI, and model infrastructure at Uber, as he joins #theCUBE's John Furrier for a one-on-one discussion at Anyscale's #RaySummit earlier this week. “The Uber team is doing computer vision, natural language processing, and a hybrid of unstructured and structured data. They have no problem using it directly. When we deal with tabular data, we handle it by creating abstractions for ourselves. We convert some of the tabular data into unstructured Parquet files and process these as intermediate representations, so that we hide all this complexity from our users,” Li shares. “We operate one shared ML platform that handles both tabular data — which existed even before Uber thought about an ML platform in 2014 — and new multimodal use cases. The Token Wars of the chip startups. Why the fight for the fastest inference will influence the future of AI. „Today, Cerebras, SambaNova, and Groq are all delivering over 1,000 tokens per second, and the “token wars” have revved up considerably. Know those annoying CAPCHA quizzes? First you were clicking on letters to help machines learn how to recognize text. Then you clicked on street lights, crosswalks etc to teach Google's self driving cars how to drive. Tesla has one upped Google. The video feeds from every Tesla car are the "CAPTCHA" for autonomous driving. The video sees the environment and records how the driver reacts..essentially training the machine how to drive. #ai #fsd

Your Uber ride could soon be completely driverless. Uber and Waymo, the self-driving arm of Google's parent company Alphabet, are teaming up to bring the robotaxi service to riders in Austin and Atlanta in early 2025, right from the Uber app. Waymo is already offering its fully autonomous ride-hailing service to the public via the Waymo One app in Phoenix and San Francisco, and to select members of the public in Los Angeles (In Phoenix, you can also use Uber to summon a Waymo vehicle). It's currently conducting testing in Austin. With the progress of Waymo and the Tesla event yesterday, something I wrote about in 2021 could become true as soon as 2027. In some industries (like ride sharing), marketplaces are just an intermediary step to aggregate independent suppliers. Ultimately, companies will figure out how to provide the service themselves at scale, and we'll have a few very large "super-suppliers". But in other industries (like e-commerce) where the consumer values creativity, consolidated suppliers won't be able to provide all of the new and interesting things that customers want, and we'll still need independent suppliers. Those industries will stay in marketplace mode much longer.

I just got around to watching the Jensen Huang Mark Zuckerberg interview from Siggraph 2024. There is a lot to unpack here, I highly recommend listen to it at 1.75 or 2.0 speed ;-). But these two are the founding CEOs of two frontrunners of GenAI - Nvidia for their GPU that made all of this possible, and Facebook which has taken the lead in LLM building because: 1) Meta has 20 years of social data and 12 years of chat data (with WhatsApp acquisition). Social data and Chat are the foundation of Chat AI. 2) Facebook has embraced open source: PyTorch, React, and now Llama 3.1. Zuck made a real good point that Apple is a closed hardware and software ecosystem, whereas Microsoft created an open compute ecosystem where Windows can run on all different kinds of OEM hardware. Llama 4+ will be that open unified LLM that can work on many different verticals. I think a takeaway from this Huang/Zuckerberg talk is that the next step in AI evolution is Personalized AI. Just think of Personalized Search, what Google tried to do but could not because they couldn’t track users once they leave their SERP. But Facebook has all the social and chat data that users are openly giving to the platform. So with Personalized AI, you don’t have to strain as much to write these elaborate multi step prompt. Since Facebook has your personal context, it can better deduce your intent with just a few words, and provide you with a personalized solution or offer. That’s extremely powerful and something that no company can offer.

Big Tech is on a jaw-dropping AI spending spree. Amazon's capital expenditure reached a record last quarter, and it plans to spend $75 billion this year—mainly building generative AI services. The $53 billion that Microsoft has spent so far this year represents about 28% of its revenue over the same period.
