🚨 Major milestone for carbon removal 🚨 Meta just announced a commitment of $35 million to carbon removal projects over the next year, aiming to hit net zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2030. 🌍 This move is in response to the U.S. Department of Energy's Carbon Dioxide Removal Purchasing Challenge, designed to scale carbon removal solutions to gigaton levels in the coming decades. Why is this important? 🌡️ According to the IPCC, we need to remove 10 billion tonnes of CO₂ per year by 2050 to avoid the worst effects of climate change. Right now, the world is only removing a fraction of that. Meta’s pledge is a crucial step toward closing that gap. Are you pro technology or pro trees? 🌳🤖 I.e. are you in the nature-based or tech-based #carbonremoval camp? Sometimes, the different methods to remove #CO2 from our atmosphere are pitted against each other. But the truth is: there's no ONE answer, no ONE legitimate road to reach climate goals. There's general consensus that we need to reduce our emissions as much as possible (and at a higher pace than the one we're currently at). And then remove the 'rest', i.e. the hard-to-abate emissions, by generating #negativeemissions. How we do the latter is still a very new field. Lots of great carbon removal solutions are being created, tested, scaled. Some will prove successful at large-scale, others less so. But we need to group our endeavors to make the #gigaton impact that is needed to reach our #netzero goals. 🌍 That's our take at neustark – one we share with many industry peers including Tracy Johns at Meta, who's written a powerful blog on the topic 👇

Tech companies like Meta and Netflix are showing interest in a U.S.-led carbon credits scheme initiated by former climate envoy John Kerry. This initiative aims to address the rising emissions from data centers and AI technologies. The scheme, known as the Energy Transition Accelerator (ETA), allows regional governments to earn carbon credits by reducing emissions from fossil fuel infrastructure and increasing renewable energy. These credits can be sold to polluting companies, financing the transition to clean energy. Kerry emphasized that companies must also directly cut emissions, as relying solely on offsets is insufficient.
