SIC now HEAL International is a small organization with a big dream -- that every person has access to the healing that they need.

The work of HEAL International is based on the principle that every human life has equal value, irrespective of socioeconomic status. Adults and children living in areas that lack essential health services bear a disproportionate burden of disease and health complications and have been shown to have a shorter life expectancy than people living in communities that have access to basic health services and health education. Moreover, medical infrastructure and economics are intimately linked. Poor health conditions and infrastructure in resource-limited communities can have a dramatic effect on local economies.

Working cross-culturally means that we must challenge our own ideas about how life "should" work. It means that we must recognize that we have blind spots in every interaction. We are always operating without a complete and perfect picture -- and the picture that we have is always shaped by our own cultural lens and life experiences.

If we've learned anything in the last ten years, it's that lasting community development and evolution starts within communities. It starts with individuals who have dreams and vision, not outside aid workers telling people what solutions should be implemented.

We see our role as community facilitators. We bring some expertise and a willingness to find expertise when we don't have it. We bring a willingness to be flexible. We are the people who will walk the road with you, for as long as you need us there. Perhaps most importantly, we bring a willingness to listen without judgment and the need to "fix" everything.

Welcome to the website for Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS, a research and resource center based in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS is the largest clinical trial, education, behavioral health and nutrition support center dedicated to fighting HIV and AIDS in the Southwestern United States.

A 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS (formerly Body Positive) was founded in 1990 by Kirk Baxter. The Center’s vision, “leading the fight against HIV and AIDS” is carried out through our mission of reducing infection, improving quality of life and contributing to worldwide research.

Today, hundreds of thousands of people around the world are taking HIV and AIDS-fighting drugs that earned Federal Drug Administration approval, thanks in part to the Center’s clinical trials and biomedical research program.

Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS provides these services in a nurturing environment:

Leading-edge medical research through the largest privately funded, nonprofit, HIV clinical trials site in the Southwestern United States.
Education programs, including group and individual instruction for men, women and youth infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.
HIV prevention programs for men, women, youth, and transgender individuals.
Wellness services, including nutritional consultations, naturopathic medicine and an on-site vitamin shop.
Emotional support for HIV-positive individuals, their friends and families.
Family support services, including child watch, family camp and social activities for families living with HIV/AIDS.
Community outreach, reaching out to underserved populations and providing connection to HIV services.

he International Alliance for the Prevention of AIDS (IAPA) was founded in 2004 by Arizona college students inspired by community focused health initiatives to combat the spread of HIV in India, basing the organization in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

IAPA was based in Chennai for two reasons. First and foremost, according to the UNAIDS and the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), the southern region of the country shoulders the heaviest burden of HIV infections, with Tamil Nadu having high incidence and prevalence rates for HIV infection and AIDS. Second, Tamil Nadu is widely recognized as having the best health infrastructure in India with regard to HIV, with surveillance, testing, and targeting of high risk groups all serving as essential focal programs of NGO’s and government organizations. These conditions allowed IAPA to easily integrate into the HIV prevention and treatment network of Chennai, while focusing on groups that were previously not targeted, such as youth and university students.

By the summer of 2005, IAPA was a federally registered non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the federal tax code.

In 2006, IAPA India was registered as a Charitable Trust in Chennai, run completely in-country by local staff. IAPA has since run nine successful summer volunteer programs, bringing over 150 American students together with over 70 Indian students to teach HIV prevention education to thousands of secondary school and university students, slum residents, fishermen, and HIV hospice visitors. The IAPA India staff has collaborated with several other Chennai based NGOs to produce several street plays and community education programmes. IAPA and IAPA India are currently preparing programs to facilitate greater community cooperation, monitoring and evaluation of HIV projects around the city, and stigma reduction education programs.
