Lord Scriven offered invaluable insight during a debate on Physician Associates (PAs) and Anaesthesia Associates (AAs) in the House of Lords. His speech highlighted the dedication and professionalism of PAs and AAs practising across the UK and the vital role they play in improving patient outcomes. Lord Scriven's recognition of the challenges faced by PAs and AAs was particularly powerful. He noted: “The lack of respect and the bullying behaviour that some medical leaders within the BMA have decided to adopt when dealing with the issues around the use and deployment of these professionals are not only unacceptable but go against the very GMC regulations that govern you as a doctor.” We thank Lord Scriven for his compassion and for addressing these unacceptable behaviours. His call to a small minority of doctors to “Stop” such actions echoes the need for professionalism and respect across all healthcare roles. Equally significant was his emphasis on evidence over anecdote: “To quote individual cases and then equate the lack of patient safety with all PAs or AAs is neither useful nor correct.” Lord Scriven’s speech underscores the importance of data-driven approaches, highlighting research by Professor Vari Drennan and the BMJ Open study, which demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of PAs in various settings. He also brought attention to solutions for improving the public's understanding of PAs and AAs, advocating for: A refreshed national campaign to raise awareness of these roles. Clear professional accountability through the new GMC regulatory scheme. As we anticipate the findings of the Leng Review, Lord Scriven reminded us of its critical role: “If the review identifies the key changes required and the Government act on them, [PAs and AAs will] become a vital part of a resilient NHS.” The importance of the Leng Review cannot be overstated. This independent review will provide a balanced and evidence-based framework for the future of PAs and AAs. This is a crucial opportunity to build a stronger, more collaborative NHS where every member of the multidisciplinary team is valued for their contributions to patient care. #PhysicianAssociate #AnaesthesiaAssociate #MAPs #UMAPs #CMAPs #MedicalAssociateProfessionals #MAPStudent #PAstudent #AAstudent #HoL #HouseOfLords
