  • We are pleased to share our annual report from the Professional Standards Authority (PSA), which confirms we have met all 18 of their standards for good regulation. Within the report, they made particular mention of the progress we've made towards our target to eliminate disproportionate fitness to practise referrals from employers by 2026 and differential attainment in medical education by 2031, as well as our work to improve the timelines of fitness to practise cases. The review considered our performance against standards for areas including equality, diversity and inclusion, guidance, education, registration and fitness to practice. The full performance review is available to read on the PSA’s website https://lnkd.in/eh-F5Sp8

    • A quote from our Chief Executive, Charlie Massey in relation to our periodic review from the Professional Standards Authority. He writes, "As we become a multi-professional regulator it is more important than ever that we uphold these high standards, supporting our registrants to deliver the best care possible for our patients"
  • Congratulations to Professor Pushpinder Singh Mangat, who has been appointed as our new Medical Director and Director of Education and Standards! From his experiences as a registered doctor and the Deputy Chief Medical Officer in Wales, Push brings with him a wealth of expertise. This will be essential in our work to set the standards and professional behaviours for all doctors, physician associates and anaesthesia associates working in the UK. Push's experience will also be invaluable in helping us make sure that everyone we regulate has the education and training needed to deliver good, safe patient care. We look forward to welcoming Push next year, where he’ll work closely with Professor Colin Melville on the run up to his retirement in June. After many years of work, the General Medical Council has now begun statutory regulation of physician associates, as well as anaesthesia associates, in addition to doctors. Regulation will help assure patients, colleagues and employers that PAs and AAs have the knowledge and skills to work safely and that they can be held to account if serious concerns are raised. Professor Dame Carrie MacEwen was appointed as Chair of the GMC Council in May 2022. And she joins us on the podcast today, to discuss bringing PAs and AAs into regulation with the GMC #physicianassociate

  • Registration for physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) is open.   To all PAs and AAs – we’re looking forward to welcoming you. If you’re on a voluntary register, you don’t need to apply until we invite you in January, but you can start preparing your documents. If you’re not on a voluntary register, we encourage you to apply as soon as you’re able. Regulation will have a positive impact and help to strengthen patient safety. You can find more information about how we’ll register PAs and AAs on our website - https://lnkd.in/eB5YeiVH

  • This afternoon, our Council have approved the final rules, standards and guidance that we’ll use to regulate physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs).   We’re grateful to the over 3,000 individuals who responded to our public consultation that has helped shape our approach.   Regulation will help to provide assurance that PAs and AAs have the right level of education and training to meet our registration requirements, meet the standards that we expect, and can be held to account if serious concerns are raised. Registration for PAs and AAs will open on Monday 16 December.

  • Our recent #StateOfMed Workforce report shows that doctors’ career pathways are changing. In England and Wales, where specific data is available to us, more doctors than ever before are taking on locally employed (LE) roles. LE doctors play an important and valuable role in health services across the UK. But the report warns that the UK risks wasting their talents to the detriment of patient care. We know from our previous research that many are on short-term contracts or non-permanent posts, with poorly defined roles and limited opportunities for career progression.  A greater range of training routes and career pathways are needed to allow all doctors to develop their skills and be recognised for their expertise #UKHealthcare #Doctors Head to the comments for a link to the full report ⤵️

  • Say hello to Eshwa - the winner of our 2024 GMC and Medical Schools Council student competition 👋 🎉 The third year Brunel University of London student created an animated video to help other students understand the Medical Licensing Assessment, its purpose and how it will contribute to patient safety. Competition judge Professor Colin Melville said, “Thank you to all of this year’s entrants. The variety of content submitted showcased a real skill within the medical student community of providing information in many varied ways in order for it resonate with their peers. "The other judges and I came to a unanimous agreement for the winning entry, which is accessible, engaging and assuring. Well done!” Head to the comments to watch the winning video! 📽️ #MedStudents #MedicalStudent #FutureDoctor

  • Last year saw an increase in the number of doctors practising in the UK, with more than two thirds of those joining the register having qualified abroad. This means that many doctors will not only be adjusting to UK practice, but also navigating a new life in a new country. We continue to run free workshops for doctors new to the UK, offering practical guidance on ethical scenarios and the chance to connect with other internationally-qualified doctors. Last year, more than 10,500 international medical graduates attended a session. Concerted, sustained efforts are needed across the UK’s healthcare systems to provide the induction, integration and inclusion vital for those new to working as a doctor in the UK.
