As a B Corp business, it’s important to play our part in fighting food poverty in the community. The Food Foundation reported that “an estimated 7.2 million adults and 2.7 million children experienced food insecurity in June 2024”. That’s why we’re proud to have donated 1,391,377 portions of fresh fruit or veg to food charities this year. Since we launched our One Box: One Portion scheme, we’ve made a donation for every Fruit & Veg Box we’ve delivered to our sustainable shoppers, hitting an overall total of 2,773,539. Our charity partners, Dons Local Action Group, School Food Matters and The Felix Project put this much-need food to good use. For a business that loves food done right, Christmas lunch is a big deal. Our amazing Chef Paul, did an incredible job with his kitchen assistants, cooking up all the turkey, veg, trimmings and gravy needed for an office-wide feast. A decline in biodiversity poses a global threat. That’s why we're proud to see an increase in demand for organic, here in the UK. The Soil Association are confident that organic farmland will continue to increase to meet this demand as well. In fact, the Scottish government has committed to doubling its area of organic land by 2026, backing this up with financial incentives. Last year, there was a 7% increase in fully organic land in Scotland, creating lots of new havens for wildlife to thrive in. On average, organic farms create an environment that’s 30% more biodiverse, providing homes for bees, birds and butterflies. Biodiversity also benefits farmers, improving soil health so that they can deliver produce all year round. Plus, natural pest control means less reliance on pesticides. Farming is one of the most demanding livelihoods there is. But like us, farmers know that difficult is worth doing. That’s why we’re committed to partnerships that are fair and collaborative. And according to a poll last year by the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, 88% of the British public agree with us. When it comes to pricing, honesty is everything. We talk through any increases that come about due to variables. We don’t drive our farmers down on price. Instead, we come to mutually beneficial agreements. And if there are problems, we work through them together. We’ve worked directly with organic farmers since day one. So we understand how labour-intensive organic growing is. And we believe that everyone should be making a profit. We’ve built long-lasting partnerships (some measured in decades) and are always looking for ways to back them further. Organic farming is a cornerstone of our business and has been since 1988. One of the biggest hallmarks of organic is that artifical pesticides can’t be used. While conventional farming practices allow UK growers to use up to 428 different types of pesticides, organic farmers can only use 28. And they need to be of a natural origin. Each year, Pesticide Action Network UK (PAN) publishes their list of the 12 fruit & veg most likely to contain residues of two or more pesticides. With Peaches (85%), Grapes (84%) and Strawberries (83%) topping their ‘Dirty Dozen’ list in 2023. Organic farmers never use harmful, artificial pesticides. And even view natural pesticides as a last resort – only looked to once all other natural ways to deal with pests have been explored. In the long term, fewer pesticides mean greater biodiversity and more resilient crops. Good for farmers. Good for people. And good for the planet.
