#DrinkLebanon (and #DrinkIsrael): And Pray for Peace!
What? An Israeli winemaker telling whoever will listen to drink Lebanese wine?
Yes.
Sadly winemakers from both sides of the Israel/Lebanon border have suffered due to Hezbollah almost every day of the past year firing bombs into Israel.
Much of the population of the Israeli Northern communities have been displaced for almost a year, approximately 100K people (officially 61K but many living just outside the security zone moved as well). The same goes for the population of Southern Lebanon that have fled Hezbollah and the Israeli military reactions to the Hezbollah bombing. Many Israeli wineries over the past year that are close to the border lost much of this years crop and have to work under constant threat of Hezbollah bombing.
Over the past few weeks this has gotten even worse, as Israel increased attacks on Hezbollah to get them to stop bombing, and Hezbollah increased their attacks and range (we were "south" enough to avoid much of the fighting, but for the past two weeks we have been bombed daily, sometimes a few times a day, but thanks to Iron Dome casualties are very low).
As you can see from the attached article, the Israeli stepped up attacks on Hezbollah have sadly impacted innocent civilians (please, let's not get into the debate here over who should do what, whose "fault it is" and simply mourn the loss of life of innocents) and wineries.
While I will not compare loss of life to wine-making, wine is an important part of life, and the well regarded Lebanese wines are a testament to following your passion even in the most challenging of conditions.
For those that drink wines not certified kosher, if you haven't tried any Lebanese wine yet -- please do. They need your support.
And I do look forward to a day when peace comes to our border with Lebanon, and we can imagine joint Israel/Lebanon wine festivals around the world.
(so far there are no wines from Lebanon certified kosher, hopefully that will change in the future)
