Our Purpose:

Without a song, there is no music. The Recording Academy’s Songwriters & Composers Wing represents a vast and diverse community of music creators within these crafts. Working collaboratively with the Academy’s membership base and ecosystem of all music creators, the Wing fosters recognition of all genres of songwriters and amplifies their unique role in policy discussions that seek fair compensation for creators. Through educational offerings including panels, mixers, songwriter retreats and mentorship, the Wing will provide opportunities for recognition, networking and collaboration, and welcomes the prospect of new Academy members. The Wing will also spotlight emerging opportunities for song and scoring achievement within a variety of media on a global basis.

Recording Academy members have the power to transform the music industry. We welcome all eligible songwriters & composers to join the Academy in its mission to cultivate the well-being of the music community.

Songwriters & Composers Advocacy

Just as music begins with the song, music advocacy begins with the songwriter. Using the Academy’s voice in Washington and statehouses across the country, the Wing enlists its songwriter and composer members to fight to ensure fair compensation for every use.

Songwriter advocacy led to the passage of the Music Modernization Act. This historic legislation created the Mechanical Licensing Agency (MLC), a new collective that will pay songwriters and publishers digital mechanical royalties. But songwriters and composers must ensure their works are registered.
