Experience is experience and it's all relevant regardless of how "long" you've been doing something. This morning I had a call with a founder in NZ who has a great software platform helping businesses get timesheet data into Xero and we got talking about the value of mentorship and communities. In this scenario, the founder reached out to me some time ago through TinySeed to get some advice and we've had 2 calls now. In both calls, I hope I was able to provide some valuable insights but I actually learned plenty as well! Mentorship is a two-way street - give value where you can but also just sit there and listen and be a sounding board. There's many paths to a successful business, it would be ignorant to think you've find the "only" one. Founders, your team members, family members, friends, co-founders, mentors and mentees all have experience from different perspectives, with different nuances and there's a very good chance they know something you don't. For the most part, business is not like poker where you are trying to hold your cards close to your chest and win the pot - get yourself into an environment where the pot is big enough for everyone to win, share what you know, ask how to be better and give value where you can.

Is your data ready to ensure the success of the implementation of your new system? As high as 70-80% of system implementations fail, and of this, it has been cited that as high as 30% of the data in the system once launched is incorrect. In the countless system implementations I have been part of, I always start with “how confident are you on the quality of the data going into the new system, and what is your data preparation plan?”. We are currently working with a client who is moving from outsourcing to insourcing various assets, and is looking for a system to manage the assets once insourced. The challenge they have is the data going into the system is manually constructed in Excel, and lacks governance to ensure it is correct, accurate and timely. If not addressed, this lack of data quality issues will hinder the system implementation, provide inaccurate reports and may also put the insourcing strategy at risk. Prior to any new system implementation, it is critical you ensure your data is secure and fit-for-purpose, and to ensure your processes are documented and optimised. Only then, will you be able to truly realise the envisioned ROI. In addition to data quality, it is also critical businesses understand what data is being captured, where the data is being held and how it is stored to ensure they are meeting regulatory requirements. The conversation about generative AI is one we all should all lead, where possible, within our respective communities, be they personal or professional. 🤖 ... And, because I like to practise what I preach, I was delighted to be a guest on Radio Adelaide's "Inner View" program earlier this week because it gave me a chance to do just that! 🙌 Hosted by the lovely Ellie, this is a program designed to cover a broad range of topics relating to education. Sounds like an internal primary or secondary index 'skew' between different systems (or just a bug). Can happen when restoring records to a database in live use when changing a schema, as the precise order that sets the foreign key mappings used by the other system will not match... This might even be a stale cache somewhere.. Hence why you should always use synthetic keys when maintaining a relationship between two distinct databases, never use internal primary or secondary keys, just asking for trouble... #databreach #australia #databases #integrity

I see the ATO is advertising for IT architects (visit ato.gov.au/ITcareers), and I wish them the best of luck. I wrote the piece below about designing the portal many years ago - I'm pretty sure the challenges will remain for systems overall.
