What do you do if your technological innovation lacks empathy?

La empatía no es solo un valor, es una estrategia inteligente, para lograrlo debemos seguir estos pasos : 1. Reconocer el problema: Analiza los comentarios de los usuarios. Realiza pruebas de usuario. 2. Implementar soluciones: Rediseñar la interfaz para que sea mas intuitiva. Incluir opciones de personalización. Ofrecer asistencia y ayuda. 3. Incorporar la empatía en el proceso de desarrollo: Involucrar a los usuarios desde las primeras etapas. Realizar estudios de mercado y análisis de necesidades. Adoptar una perspectiva centrada en el usuario. 4. Comunicar con empatía: Utilizar un lenguaje claro y comprensible. Enfatizar los beneficios para el usuario. Mostrar sensibilidad a las necesidades y preocupaciones de los usuarios.

I remember in the recent past when I ran a large Technology contract for Accessibility, innovation was an imperative. Empathy was an even bigger imperative. The client was ensuring my team was delivering to the exact outcome when they themselves were developing the application. No short-cuts. That meant every feature we delivered every sprint, had the end user who had Accessibility issues, in mind. Our test cases captured all such methods. Every time my sprint team wanted to merge their code into main, and they created a pull request, they'd have a 4-eye check to ensure if they had Accessibility issues, would they approve the PR?! Even before we started, we ran a thorough Accessibility training to "wake" our people up to this.

Bringing the customer into the heart of your innovation process can provide significant insight that would be difficult to achieve otherwise. When I was first introduced to design thinking and human-centred design principles, it was in the context of thinking about the future of banking and financial services. By having real customer input provided at the very start and during the project, all of our subsequent decisions were grounded in the needs of customers (rather than just our own biases and assumptions).

Human-centered design, in one way, for my team came in the form of hiring two individuals with actual Accessibility issues or a differently-abled individuals. We quite literally brought the "end-user" to develop, test and deploy our code. With that what we did was to bring out the human side of our technology. Nothing felt better at the time!

Another aspect of our technological innovation while delivering this crucial project mentioned above was to continuously challenge the sprint team to think of functionality as if they were differently-abled. Would they be able to read images, pictures without the alt text, etc. We did extensive research along with our client on end-user analysis, etc. We used different testing methodologies like WAVE - web accessibility evaluation tool and also complying with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) which has 4 aspects such as, Perceivable - Operable - Understandable - Robust. The team knew via accessibility dev & testing, they were creating future-proof products & services that would be usable by everyone.

To augment the message of empathy in our technology innovation on this contract, we brought in a differently-abled famous speaker to talk about their journey with their personal constraints and constraints they faced using modern-day technology, like mobile phones, websites, phone apps, etc. We just end up taking everything for granted - but ask someone who doesn't have what you have and you will hopefully change to be more empathetic. Usage of bright colors, pictures with no alt text, etc are all examples of how we can rise to the occasion to make our features more accessible, thus forcing us to be innovative.

“The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect.” – Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web. This brings to mind the above-mentioned WCAG guidelines of Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, Robust. As long as we can create our epics, stories, features, test cases and support for our applications in a manner that truly encompasses the end user experience and not just the traditional way of developing features, we can safely to a great extent say, we are "improving".

All this innovative tech is eliminated the emotional feeling from human cognition limbic system. Why? We all know the answer. Yet. This is good for admin. Repetition workloads. Not for counseling and certainly level deep function beyond human intelligence. I can't repeat myself more. But pls ensure those who design ai. Innovative technology inventor. They don't become the algorithm as the pattern they built a robot 🤖..hahaha Be a critical thinker and polymath to embrace the immersive tech landscape for all human to live in harmony pls.
