Just wrapped up hosting the workshop “Value of Beauty Today and Beyond 2025” at the 12th Annual Global Beauty Trends & Innovations Conference in London. It was a fantastic event filled with insightful conversations, joyful reunions with old friends and new meaningful connections. The beauty landscape has never been more fascinating. Industry players gathered to explore the transformative shifts shaping beauty through AI, health & wellbeing, and digital consumer engagement. My key takeaway? Adaptability and authenticity will define the winners. But one crucial element was barely discussed: Beauty as a force for good. Beauty will transcend the surface of looks and scents when we collectively embrace it as a reflection of our values, actions, and the legacy we leave behind. I've always wondered how much we consume not for utility, but more for the showcase of wealth and social status. In the past, showcasing has had several promotions, with social platforms turning private luxuries into public spectacles, where the value of experiences and products is measured by likes and shares. In an era dominated by digital impressions, the 'Instagrammability' of our purchases often dictates choices more than the products' inherent usefulness. The phenomenon of 'viral luxury' illustrates this shift; a simple accessory worn by a celebrity, an influencer, or the masses can transform it into a must-have item overnight, regardless of its practicality. As companies pivot to emphasize aesthetics for social media allure, creativity and innovation in aesthetics flourishes, yet quality and sustainability often suffer significant compromises. The relentless focus on creating visually appealing items diverts significant research and development resources away from breakthroughs in durability and efficiency, potentially stalling technological progress in critical areas. This presentation of status is so powerful that people often don’t choose what genuinely fulfills them, nor maximize their choices; instead, they choose to remain unfulfilled, merely to project a dignified image. Having traveled to various places and now living in Hong Kong, I've gotten a zoomed-in picture of how pervasive this trend is, and I can say that it is, in fact, a compromise in humanity's progress. The irony of this is, that with hundreds of years of research, progress, and decisions made to program more happiness in human lives, it is indeed a miracle how an average healthy person is more miserable compared to a few hundred years ago.
