Co-Operation Last week our SBSC Group [a peer group for IT support companies in the Northwest] met at Sandbrook House, the offices of Zen Internet, and also the home of Myson Pages. Zen kindly let us use the room at no charge as they want to support our community. Richard Tang, Zen's founder, is these days a famous son of Rochdale, but it's a town that has been churning out people like him for years. In 1844 The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers were formed. 28 men, each raised £1 to start when we know today as the Co-Op. Rochdale is its birthplace. If you ever drive to the town, a bridge proudly states Rochdale - Birthplace of Co-operation. Our meeting is all about Co-operation (and I'm going with the hyphen as on the bridge...). We're all competitors but also all wise enough that by sharing what we know we will all get better. It seems counter intuitive, but for everything you give to the group you get something back, often something you didn't know you needed. Thursday was a great meeting, and we also had Richard Tubb joining us in a flying visit from the North East to North West. Richard was the first to carve out a helping role, in our industry around 12/13 years ago, and most of us have come to know him, trust him and appreciate his input and guidance in that time. It was good to have him in the room, but also in Rochdale. You could say he's a pioneer too. Lunch first at The Baum, a pub right next door to the original Co-Op store on Toad Lane (see below) which is now a museum, then back to Sandbrook House, which was the Co-Ops headquarters from 1994, celebrating 150 years (and now Zen's HQ). An afternoon interviewing Richard Tang for his Tubblog Podcast filled a gap before our meeting in the board room - The Alan Turing suite - how apt. So, a full day of co-operation, in the birthplace of co-operation.
