Activities and Societies: Undertook a detailed study of sediments where the Don River enters Lake Ontario in the Toronto harbour area. Developed a biological assay and applied it to assess pollution levels in the sediments. Undertook preliminary analysis of constituents in sediment. High levels of organic pollutants in the sediment an issue.

One of several persons selected to judge 16 qualifying Ontario teams from the lean start-up method perspective, a business model based on a transitional framework that aims to identify a customer problem and a repeatable and scalable business solution to that problem. This model focuses on early-stage adaptability (also known as “pivots”) based on direct customer and potential partner feedback in response to the details in the model itself, including basic product prototypes.

I originally proposed and then researched and wrote this module to focus especially on the role of ICTs for climate action, with a strong focus on mitigating GHG emissions and promoting energy efficiency because that is where the great opportunity lies for abating emissions and dealing with climate change. It has however been extensively recast to also deal with adaptation. When I presented the content of the Module in Korea in Feb. of 2010, I was surprised to be greeted by an audience made up exclusively of experts working in disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation, which had not been the original intention of the Academy Series. The Module was aimed at decision makers who are not experts in either adaptation or mitigation, so key figures in ministries of planning, development cooperation, energy, transport, urban planning, municipal development, agriculture, private sector development, trade and industry, etc. Still, the report does cover many of the issues. Key in this report are the ICT trends that will enable climate action and some of the examples of how ICTs not only contribute to but are essential for climate action. I am working on a report that focuses much more extensively on the key issues related to ICTs for climate action. I will share the PowerPoint presentations I made and delivered in Korea as part of the research that I undertook on Module 10.

As the diffusion of ICTs increases, governments around the world are rolling out e-government plans and projects to enhance service delivery to the public through the use of ICTs. In many

As the diffusion of ICTs increases, governments around the world are rolling out e-government plans and projects to enhance service delivery to the public through the use of ICTs. In many
jurisdictions, both the financial and technical means available to government are limited. This constrains the ability of governments to deliver the benefits of e-government to everyone.
However, there are significant pools of funds and expertise that the public sector can tap to fulfil its obligations to deliver the highest level of public service at a reasonable cost. This module discusses these alternative funding options for ICT for development (ICTD) and e-government projects. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are highlighted as a particularly useful funding option for ICT-based services and e-government initiatives in developing countries.

The objective of the e-Environment Toolkit is to help countries, jurisdictions, communities, organizations and others in the developing world especially assess the contribution that ICTs can make to reduce energy consumption and green house gas (GHG) emissions as part of a national climate change strategy and action plan. The e-Environment Toolkit proposes an approach and some tools for this purpose.

This report, ICTs for e-Environment, reviews key ICT trends and provides an overview of the impact that ICTs have on the environment and climate change as well as their role in helping mankind to mitigate and adapt to these changes. Intended as guidelines for developing countries, the report approaches the topic from a developmental perspective and is based on consultations with key actors and extensive online research. The ICTs for e-Environment report documents current activities and initiatives and makes a set of recommendations for strengthening the capacity of developing countries to make beneficial use of ICTs to mitigate and adapt to environmental change, including climate change.
The ICTs for e-Environment report presents the results of research that demonstrate that ICTs can help to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while increasing energy efficiency and reducing the use of natural resources. This is achieved through the use of ICTs for travel replacement,
dematerialization and reduced energy consumption. The report indicates there is a need for more research to understand the long-term impacts of ICTs on human activities. For example, there is a need to undertake life cycle assessments (LCAs) of ICT impacts on the environment and especially on GHG emissions and energy consumption. The report also looks extensively at the use of ICTs in many different aspects of work on the environment, including environmental observation, analysis, planning, management and protection, mitigation and capacity building.
