“In a world where we can no longer rely on traditional weather patterns, we must rethink how we manage water.” 💧 This was the dilemma for the final webinar of the CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains, ‘Water in a heated world’. This included: ♨️ A look at the shocking numbers from the latest World Meteorological Organization State of Global Water Report ♨️ A history of water’s growing presence in climate discussions from COP15 to COP29 ♨️ Examples of how to respond to a heated world from International Water Management Institute (IWMI) And the big question: What is the priority science area to move forward? 📉 Catch up with the recording, podcast, summary and presentations here: https://lnkd.in/gyX777Dg #NEXUSGainsInitiative #OneCGIAR #WaterSecurity #WaterScarcity #Drought #WEFEnexus

🌱 Genebanks conserve and share crop diversity to help users produce nutritious food in a changing climate. 📽️ Clinton Obinna Ogwuike, Data Manager at the Africa Rice Center genebank, explains why it's important to offer users detailed information on this diversity. 🌾 The AfricaRice genebank – known as the Rice Biodiversity Center for Africa - holds the world’s largest collection of African rice (Oryza glaberrima). 🌍 It is one of 11 CGIAR genebanks that share tens of thousands of samples with farmers, breeders and scientists every year. 📢 Milestone for climate and biodiversity! The IPBES Nexus Assessment on Biodiversity, Water, Food, Health (and Climate) has been officially approved by 147 countries. The CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains, and before it the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE), have contributed substantially to achieving this milestone. The assessment focuses on more than 70 solutions available to policy makers, including managing ecosystem function in agricultural landscapes; reducing nutrient, plastic, and pesticide pollution; and shifting to healthy diets. 🚜 🍃 🍎 In this time of triple planetary crises – environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and health challenges – the assessment offers a new hope of finding innovative solutions that address more than one challenge at a time. 📢 Don't miss this online workshop tomorrow on "Groundwater governance policy, tools, and opportunities in Ethiopia", co-organized by the CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and the Ministry of Water and Energy, Ethiopia. Further details and information about how to join below ⬇️ #NEXUSGainsInitiative #Groundwater #WaterSecurity
📌 Online workshop on Groundwater governance tools and opportunities in Ethiopia 📆 December 18. 3:00-5:00pm Addis Ababa, East Africa Time; 7-9am Washington DC, EST 🤝 Co-organized by #NEXUSGainsInitiative, IFPRI and Ministry of Water and Energy, Ethiopia 💬 Speakers include Bryan Bruns, Seleshi Bekele, Claudia Ringler, and many others! 🌍 For registration, please contact [email protected] or [email protected] The workshop is intended to share results from recent international research on groundwater governance, particularly on experience with tools for groundwater governance, and to contribute to discussion about opportunities for improving groundwater governance policy and practice in Ethiopia. The workshop should improve understanding of the capabilities and limitations of groundwater governance tools, including a conceptual framework and approach which can help choose and combine tools to fit contexts, specific lessons and opportunities concerning groundwater games and related tools, and strategies for strengthening governance of key water-energy food-ecosystem nexus linkages. Discussions should identify and clarify priorities and methods for how policy could support effective groundwater governance on topics including roles and cooperation among different stakeholders in groundwater governance; how governance can address groundwater demand and supply, including aquifer recharge; and linkages between groundwater and surface water.

🌍 At #UNCCD COP16, Natalia Estrada from the Alliance of Bioversity-CIAT joined us at the session: Achieving the Rio Conventions and SDGs through multifunctional landscapes that mobilize sustainable finance, effective collaboration, and stakeholder engagement where she stressed the importance of creating landscape systems that work for the whole ecosystem—balancing the needs of carbon, people, and cultures. A one-size-fits-all approach won't cut it; instead, we need multifunctional landscape planning to achieve diverse goals. She highlighted the crucial role of long-term funding and strong partnerships in supporting both landscapes and communities. Well-performing landscapes often have 9 years of planning behind them! Partnerships should focus on capacity building, coordination, and cross-landscape learning. And funding must ensure that the processes that support these systems are sustained over time. Ultimately, collective action is key to achieving the SDGs and the Rio Conventions on time. #SustainableLandscapes #MultifunctionalLandscapes #Partnerships #SDGs #Agrobiodiversity #ClimateAction

Surface water is essential for agricultural, domestic, and industrial production worldwide. Monitoring surface dynamics is crucial for sustainable ecosystems and global water resources − especially in semi-arid regions. Work under the CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains, recently published in the Irrigation and Drainage journal, suggests that smaller communities reliant on smaller water bodies are at a higher risk from climate variability.
