Indigenous Cultural Vitality

About us

First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation was established in 2000 to support the vitality of Indigenous languages, arts and cultural heritage in B.C. We are a registered charity that provides grant funding and support to Indigenous organizations and communities. Our Vision: Indigenous languages, arts and cultural heritage are strong, supported and being passed on from generation to generation. As a foundation, our individual and collective values connect us to our sacred responsibilities. These values guide our work, and it is our role to uphold them in all that we do. Indigenous-led: We are an Indigenous organization working with Indigenous people. Knowledge: We draw on and share knowledge with communities and partners. Resilience: We focus on and honour the strengths of Indigenous people. Helping one another: We take care of each other through providing resources and funding. Responsibility: We act with respect and thoughtfulness towards all living and nonliving relatives to do our work in a good way, as all things are connected. Cultural continuity: We give thanks as we learn from past generations and share with future generations.

  • 🪶As an Indigenous-led organization, First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation is committed to the redistribution of power and the fostering of strong, transparent and reciprocal relationships. 🤝 Through all that we do, we continue to advocate for a more equitable charitable sector, one that showcases the diversity of the communities it serves and actively involves them in funding decisions. We know that B.C. First Nations communities know the best pathways for reclaiming and revitalizing their own languages, arts and cultures, and uplifting their work is our shared journey to Truth and Reconciliation. 🎁 Make an online gift 🎁 ➡️https://lnkd.in/gaD_WPqN #BCFirstNations #Revitalization #TruthandReconciliation #IndigenousCulture Photo: Melody Charlie

  • The connection between Indigenous culture and heritage is deeply rooted in the land, where the wisdom of a community is intricately woven into the fabric of the trees, rugged shores and the encompassing waters of ancestral territories. 🌲 🌊 In what is recently referred to as British Columbia, First Nations acknowledge the profound interconnection they share with their ancestral lands, recognizing a mutual reliance between themselves and the Earth. This profound bond signifies that the land is not merely a physical space but also an integral aspect of their identity, guiding Indigenous communities in nurturing and preserving the resources bestowed by the land. 🪶 🌎 Climate-related disasters pose a severe threat to culturally significant sites in B.C. First Nations communities. Areas holding immense cultural value, such as berry bushes, petroglyphs and forests containing culturally modified trees, are particularly vulnerable. This heightened risk underscores the pressing need to restore and preserve cultural knowledge efforts in these areas. Multi-year funding is incredibly impactful for cultural heritage preservation because it contributes to larger projects such as infrastructure and research that require several years to launch and complete. • At First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation we know that strengthening Indigenous art forms bolsters individual and community wellness, through reflecting on our past and connecting it to our future.❤️🙌   Across the province more recently referred to as British Columbia, First Nations artists work in both ancestral and contemporary arts to express their connection to their ways of knowing, doing and being. “Art” is the simplest term used to describe these exceptional means of storytelling, as it is a vibrant union of both form and function. Monumental poles, masks, bentwood boxes, woven baskets and blankets and more are stunning visual records of history, honouring stories that have connected Indigenous Peoples to the lands and waters for millennia. 🌲🌊   This year a wide range of projects from beading, weaving and carving to documentary and film production and musical performance were uplifted through our funding from our donors and partners. The revitalization of B.C. First Nations arts require the development of new artists, as well as opportunities for mentors to share their knowledge in both traditional and contemporary methods. 🪶📽️   ➡️ Learn more about ways to give: https://lnkd.in/gnf7ZPxT ➡️ Learn more about programs: First Peoples' Cultural Council #BCFirstNationsArts #FirstNationsCarving #FirstNationsWeaving #IndigenousMusic #IndigenousStorytelling Photo: First Peoples Cultural Council Artwork: Frettchan Studios Artist Sheri Ptolemy, Samahquam Nation, FPCC Arts Grant Recipient: https://lnkd.in/gsWpx7i2

  • 🪶At First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation, we know that languages are at the heart of who Indigenous people are; they’re the lifeblood of communities and integral to well-being, individually and collectively.❤️ In recent years, language revitalization work in what is most recently referred to as British Columbia has faced many challenging circumstances, from the COVID-19 pandemic to environmental catastrophes of wildfires and flooding causing evacuations in many communities, some of which continue to this day. Despite these challenges, the work continues, and there has been incredible growth and innovative approaches to language teaching and learning. 📝 While we celebrate this meaningful work, funding for First Nations languages in B.C. and around the world is inadequate when we look to what communities need. Language keepers, teachers and Elders are working to re-establish lines of transmission so that young people can carry the language forward. It’s so important that this work is uplifted because it’s making a tangible difference in First Nations communities throughout B.C. 🙌 🤲 Learn more about ways to give: https://lnkd.in/gnf7ZPxT 🖥️ Learn more about programs: https://lnkd.in/gi5rsKpS #BCFirstNationsLanguages #FirstNations #LanguageRevitalization Art: Frettchan Studios
