The WTO’s new report on AI and Trade highlights AI’s potential to reduce trade costs and enhance productivity. At the launch event, Richard Baldwin argued that AI would accelerate service export-led growth, especially for emerging economies, and provide critical upskilling opportunities for workers. Building a permissive policy environment for AI is critical for SMEs. EU businesses surveyed list regulatory uncertainty as the primary obstacle to AI uptake, and affected businesses are 48% less likely to invest in AI technology. Cross-border data flows are key to AI, and restrictions on data flows slow innovation, increase costs for firms, and harm trade. If all economies fully restricted their data flows, the global economy would see a 5% drop in GDP and a 10% drop in exports. The economic costs of data regulatory fragmentation alone result in a loss of 1% of real GDP, with costs accruing to SMEs. Fragmented AI policies could result in a GDP loss of €600 billion annually in the EU, alone. I had the privilege of closely following the development of the WTO’s report on AI under the supervision of Lauro LOCKS as part of the WTO PhD Support Programme. The report, which will be released next week, is closely linked to my PhD research, where I explore the role of the TBT Agreement in regulating AI. The WTO stands out as one of the few organizations with established rules and mechanisms that could target AI, although there is still room for improvement. My PhD aims to critically evaluate these existing frameworks, highlighting both their strengths and limitations. I am excited to see the final report and grateful for the opportunity to engage with and exchange ideas with leading professionals in the field. #internationaltrade #artificialintelligence #wto
