The Australian Government is undertaking a comprehensive overhaul of the #NEM to facilitate the transition towards a #renewable energy dominated system. There is some 40% of #renewableenergy in the NEM, which is well on the way towards Australia's 2030 target of 82%. The Government's review of the NEM is aimed at modernising Australia's #electricity system to support a sustainable #energy future and align with its #climate objectives. The Petroleum Legislation Amendment Bill 2023, passed by the Western Australia Parliament, strengthens the state's petroleum legislation. The bill supports the Cook Government's commitment to achieving #netzero #emissions by 2050. The bill enables exploration for naturally occurring #hydrogen, offering a potentially low-emission alternative #energysource. Additional amendments include provisions for polluter pays, royalty metering, underground storage of petroleum, and blending of additives in pipelines. South Australia’s new climate bill will legally require the state to generate enough renewable energy to cover all of its annual electricity needs from 2027. The Climate Change and Greenhouse Emissions Reductions (Targets) Amendment Bill will obligate the state to slash its greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2030, compared to 2005 levels, and to reach net zero by 2050. Home to the city of Adelaide, South Australia has already more than halved its emissions since 2005 thanks to a rapid shift to wind, solar, and battery technologies, which now meet around 70% of its annual power needs. The state is a leader in rooftop solar adoption, with one in every two homes having their own systems. In the week to Monday, 2 September 2024 — the last of winter — South Australia offered a glimpse of its future. Renewable generation exceeded the state’s electricity needs by 5%, with the excess exported to neighbouring states.

Key takeouts: 1/ new and old coal finished / finishing by 2030 2/ scale economies in manufacturing and delivery costs have massive benefits and can overcome relatively average capacity factors during operation 3/ the nuclear LCOE stats and commentary is insightful (and correct) in the Australian context.

Why we need nuclear power: World leader in renewables South Australia. 4th June 18% of power used came from renewables. We need to stop talking power generation and talk power consumption. The harsh reality is that despite South Australia a world leader in solar and wind, claiming 73% of power generation came from renewables. Renewables only provide 18% of the power needed on the 4th. Renewables can never be as reliable as nuclear. We cannot afford to invest billions in renewables only to find it does not work. A lesson learned by every other country in the world. We need nuclear power and we need it yesterday. Liz Penfold #nuclearpower
