Below is our most recent Listed Dealer Comparison Report which is a good insight into the direction the industry is heading . In the end the large groups will set the agenda going forward . The large groups have spent the last 10 years jostling for market share and building geographic and in some cases brand centric dominance and share of wallet . This market share growth continues , but possibly not as voraciously as in the past , as they reach the critical mass required for the next phase. Like the large retailers in other industries before them , the car industry is required to evolve to build a floor under profitability and not suffer the ebbs and flow of market and consumer foibles . To acheive this the focus needs to be on ; 1) cost out strategy 2) brand creation 3) share of wallet retention Car retailing today is still quite a cottage industry , highly labour intensive , late cycle sales dependency , transactional focus , capital intensive. The current PE multiples of the ASX Listed Companies reflects this requirement to build this floor under profit . The future will see the largest groups replace people with technology and off shoring , like the large supermarkets staff will be replaced with customers using technology to facilitate interactions . Usership will displace ownership leading to a fractional rather than a transactional relationship with customers , this mentally changes the process for the customer . No longer talking transactional “ big dollars “ , usership will take car usage to a credit card decision rather than a full credit application . Showrooms will become profit centres rather than cost centres , like Westfield/ Harvey Norman , the group brand , share of wallet and strategic location will become a “ customer destination “ for the OEMs , who will rent space ( whether this for their own agency or dealership model ) from the facility owner . With the influx of new brands at a global level and all bets off historical market shares with EVs , access to the right location and the customer traffic will generate a premium . The big are getting bigger , but for a good reason , the model will evolve like all the other large retailers and profits will follow suit . As this evolves the PE multiples will improve , rewarding this investment.

Businesses consider closure amid rising costs Almost half of small business owners have considered closing in the last 12 months. The 2024 Small Business Conditions Survey compiled by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) found that 40% of small businesses will make a reduced or significantly reduced profit in the 2023-24 financial year, compared to the previous financial year. According to the survey, the biggest challenges facing small businesses are: * Increasing input costs * Skills and worker shortages. * Red tape and regulations “The current environment makes it hard for small businesses to create jobs and employ people,” said ACCI chief executive officer Andrew McKellar. Mr McKellar said small businesses are the backbone of the economy and need help from government, not more admin. “Small businesses need more consideration from governments, especially when they decide to change rules and regulations. Governments tend to be very good at introducing new regulations but not so good at explaining those changes.” #accountant #bookkeeping #business

#ATOAUSTRALIAUPDATE 15th May2024 “Reforming treatment of transfer balance cap for SFTs” New measure announced reforming the treatment of the transfer balance cap for successor fund transfers. On 26 October 2023, the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services announced a measure to reform treatment of the transfer balance cap (TBC) provisions for successor fund transfers (SFTs) in a media release. Then on 13 December 2023, the Australian Government re-announced the measure as part of the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook 2023–24. The measure is not yet law. The measure will ensure individuals with a capped defined benefit income stream are not adversely impacted in the event of a successor fund transfer between superannuation funds. Currently, for recipients of capped defined benefit income streams, the balance of their transfer balance account can be unintentionally affected as a result of the original income stream being treated as ceasing and a new one beginning. This measure is intended to be retrospectively applied from 1 July 2017. Treasury released the exposure draft and explanatory statement for consultation from 3 April to 24 April 2024.
