Is your data ready to ensure the success of the implementation of your new system? As high as 70-80% of system implementations fail, and of this, it has been cited that as high as 30% of the data in the system once launched is incorrect. In the countless system implementations I have been part of, I always start with “how confident are you on the quality of the data going into the new system, and what is your data preparation plan?”. We are currently working with a client who is moving from outsourcing to insourcing various assets, and is looking for a system to manage the assets once insourced. The challenge they have is the data going into the system is manually constructed in Excel, and lacks governance to ensure it is correct, accurate and timely. If not addressed, this lack of data quality issues will hinder the system implementation, provide inaccurate reports and may also put the insourcing strategy at risk. Prior to any new system implementation, it is critical you ensure your data is secure and fit-for-purpose, and to ensure your processes are documented and optimised. Only then, will you be able to truly realise the envisioned ROI. In addition to data quality, it is also critical businesses understand what data is being captured, where the data is being held and how it is stored to ensure they are meeting regulatory requirements. The big winner in August was the demand for IT professionals. A big jump, up 16%, driven by large double digit increases in all states except NSW and QLD. While public sector recruitment was strong, the private sector demand was driving the index this month. Australia’s #financialservices regulator recently trialled an #artificialintelligence system and found that automation alone failed. Humans outperformed AI in the trial, highlighting the importance of augmenting rather than automating, the role of humans in the workforce. The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) has launched the Australian Internet Observatory (AIO), a major new #research facility that will open the ‘black box’ of digital platforms and their algorithms so we can better understand how people use search engines, social media, messaging systems, and other digital services. AIO Program Lead and Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S), RMIT Distinguished Professor Julian Thomas, said digital platforms play a critical role in Australia’s economy and society, yet our capacities to collect and analyse data from digital platforms and observe their activities is very limited. “Over the past decade, there’s been a dramatic transformation in how Australians use digital platforms, how they interact with the automated systems and the digital economy, and how they communicate with machines and each other,” he said.  “Every day, we are now using more platforms, more intensively, for a wider range of activities. But as researchers we’ve had very little visibility of how digital platforms work.” The initiative supports innovative approaches to the collection and analysis of digital social data and internet platforms and the analytical tools and governance required to support cutting-edge research on social, economic, health and environmental issues. The AIO is an initiative of the ADM+S Centre and led by RMIT University in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology, The University of Queensland, QUT (Queensland University of Technology), University of Melbourne and Deakin University, enabled by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
