This is for folks who are involved in non-US tech ecosystems 👋 Most seasoned non-American founders I've met will agree that it's much easier to grow an early-stage startup in NYC and SF than anywhere else. Especially to get funding. This has helped fuel a startup version of a 'Brain Drain' for the countries founders are from. France is one of the best examples out there of how countries can improve their tech eco-system so startups don't leave. Last year on my way to a Y Combinator event out of the city, Ali and I shared an Uber with the French Escape Founders, Tristan and Antoine. They described how when Datadog's Founder Olivier Pomel moved from France to SF to grow his budding startup (which then turned into one of the biggest dev tech companies in the world) the French government took notice. Since then, they have taken steps to ensure that new startups in France get access to support. Most importantly, early-stage capital. This is a big reason why we've seen 30 unicorns emerge from France between '13-'23. And why we're seeing competitive players like Mistral AI enter the AI race. As a Danish/Canadian - I would love to see my own countries follow suit in France's approach. Especially as early-stage funding opportunities have been hit everywhere, this is a crucial moment for tech eco-systems to step up and support their earliest and most vulnerable startups. Some of them will turn out to be billion-dollar ideas, and you'll want them to stay in-house. #techcommunity #canadiantech #danishtech #startup

An excerpt from DeepEcosystems article - A recent study by Antler found that 74% of Europe's unicorn founders lack tech skills, and our own Startup Heatmap analysis (see in the comments for link to the full report) in 2023 revealed only 35% of European founders know how to code. This presents a significant challenge for growth in the European startup ecosystem, particularly given the increasing investor appetite for deep tech startups. The shortage of technical expertise among founders can limit innovation and scalability, making it crucial to activate more technical talent to step into entrepreneurial roles. Fostering an environment where developers and engineers are encouraged to lead startups could be key to unlocking the next wave of high-tech innovation in Europe. #innovation #startup #deeptech #ecosystem #entrepreneur

These are the startup founders, Big Tech managers, low-key investors—and even a bureaucrat— who could play a bigger role than you realize in shaping tech’s future. By Bloomberg Businessweek May 2, 2024 These aren’t the biggest names in tech, but they’re doing big things. They’re running Amazon.com Inc.’s logistics operations (Udit Madan) and building consumer-product conglomerates for the e-commerce age (Tushar Ahluwalia). They’re making artificial intelligence startups that do things that didn’t seem possible in the recent past (Demi Guo) and finding and funding the entrepreneurs and startups that you’ll be hearing from in the future (Dave Fontenot, Emily Liu and Luciana Lixandru). It’s impossible to predict what the next big thing will be, but chances are that people on this list will be involved.
