Earlier this year, I had the distinct pleasure of participating in two events focused on fintech and open banking in Latin America. The first was Fintech Americas in Miami from May 7-9. For this one I was just a visitor, but given how strong the event was I'm hoping to change that in the future. Their speaker lineup included the incomparable behavioral scientist Dan Ariely and innovation guru Chris Colbert, alongside a plethora of excellent speakers from across the region (with live translation). The enthusiasm to keep pushing the boundaries of fintech was palpable, and I made lots of new friends, like Sebastian Ropero, Ximena Aleman, Carlos Lau, Daniel Cacic, Viviana Gonzalez Tenjo, Lorena Ortiz de Zevallos, Barbara Bazo and Gis L.. Thank you to Ray Ruga and the team at Fintech Americas for putting on such a great show. The second event was the Open Banking Townhall in Mexico City on May 16th. For this one, I presented a keynote on open banking architecture, a subject I hadn't spoken about in a while. Fellow speakers included former OBIE Trustee Imran Gulamhuseinwala and the wonderful Alejandro Servín from BBVA, among many others. Once more, the optimism and thirst for innovation was ever present. And again, I met many pioneers driving open banking for some of the top names in Mexico, including Mariel Vasquez, Claudia Ileana Fragoso Flores, Matías Nuñez Castro, Julian Colombo, Sebastian De Lara Gomis and Beatriz Duran Serrano. Thank you to Edgar Garcia Barzanallana Bosch, Fernando Beltran and the team at Sellcom Solutions for a great event, hopefully the first of many town halls to come. So, what is actually going on in Latin America on the open banking front? Here's a quick summary: * Brazil: In July 2024, the Central Bank updated several regulatory framework parameters, including the mandatory participation for all financial institutions with more than 5M customers, expanding past only tier 1 and 2. * Colombia: In February 2024, Colombia established Regulation 004/2024, which provides initial guidelines for implementing the Colombian Open Finance ecosystem. All major financial institutions are already taking action. * Chile: In July 2024, Chile published regulations for the implementation of Open Finance, defining the types of participants, technical directives, and the types of services to be initially offered based on a two year roadmap. * Other Countries: FI's in Peru, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Argentina are discussing their Open Finance strategies, even in advance of regulatory moves, seeing it as inevitable and highly beneficial.
