Do you want to become an Age-Friendly Public Health Champion? The first step toward embedding and sustaining new practices is to build the capacity of public health professionals to become leaders in healthy aging through training and professional development. Thus, TFAH created an AFPHS Champion designation to recognize public health professionals who have committed to building their knowledge and expertise and have a desire to lead their departments in becoming age-friendly. Requirements: - Attend at least 6 AFPHS Training sessions (pre-recorded or live) - Attend at least 1 of the sessions on ageism. Oh, and did you know that becoming an AFPHS Champion will also meet the first requirement for health department recognition? Register for the upcoming sessions including: Addressing Ageism in Election Media Coverage, Better Caregiving for All, Building Community Capacity to Meet the Needs of People with Disabilities as They Age, Navigating Ethical Choices in the Care of Older Adults, Beyond Alzheimer's: Identifying and Managing Other Types of Dementia, Show Support for Age-Friendly Care, and more... #TFAH #AFPHS #agefriendly #alzheimersdisease #ADRD #dementia #aging #equity #research #community #peoplewithdisabilities

Our Statewide Survey of Older Adults shows that most residents want to stay in their communities, but do not see appropriate options for them to age-in-place. NJ needs to start focusing on building age-appropriate housing, allowing people to downsize and not just build mcmansions. I am looking forward to TFAH's Age Friendly Public Health System meeting on aging and housing tomorrow at 3: Join Trust for America's Health on July 18th for a monthly Age-Friendly Public Health Systems Training on the relationship between aging and housing. A recent report by Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies – Housing America’s Older Adults 2023 – examined the dual burden of housing and care faced by older people. This month’s training, to be held this Thursday, July 18 at 3 pm ET, will provide insights from the report as well as recent research on the factors that impact the ability of older adults to live in the community with independence and safety. This presentation will also help practitioners use a housing lens when addressing the social determinants of older adult health. Did you know that the NDIS has preferred assessments for different conditions when it comes to writing up a Functional Capacity Assessment? Some examples include using the WHODAS 2.0 for all participants, using the Life Skills Profile (LSP-16) for people with psychosocial conditions, and using the Care and Needs Scale for people with an acquired brain injury, just to name a few. To access the full list, click on the link in the comments. But wait – sometimes the assessments listed on the website aren’t enough to capture your client’s support needs – what do you do then? It is still completely acceptable and necessary to use your own clinical reasoning to choose other appropriate standardised assessments to strengthen your information gathering. To find out more about this, as well as all the other steps of completing a thorough FCA, check out “The OT Guide to Completing a Functional Capacity Assessment” online course – the link is in the comments or visit the Your OT Tutor website.
