🔗 Exploring the Link Between Pain, Physical Activity, and Quality of Life in Older Adults We are thrilled to share the publication of our latest research in the Journal of Biomedical Informatics, featured in the special issue on “The Role of Intelligent Systems in Modern Healthcare.” Our findings reveal that pain significantly impacts quality of life, particularly among older adults. Importantly, we demonstrate that physical activity plays a crucial role in mediating the relationship between pain and quality of life. This research underscores the importance of understanding the mechanisms behind declines in quality of life in older populations. These insights are vital for developing new healthcare strategies aimed at enhancing well-being in aging communities. 🔍 Looking ahead, our findings emphasize the need to explore interventions that target physical activity to mitigate the negative effects of pain on quality of life. This paper explores the application of generative AI and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) for summarizing and extracting key clinical information from electronic health records (EHR) to manage malnutrition in aged care facilities. 1️⃣ The study utilized the Llama 2 model with zero-shot prompting to generate structured summaries of nutritional status from unstructured EHR data, achieving an accuracy of 93.25%. 2️⃣ Incorporating RAG with the generative model improved the summarization accuracy to 99.25%, highlighting its effectiveness in handling unstructured data by providing additional context. 3️⃣ The AI model demonstrated 90% accuracy in identifying malnutrition risk factors from nursing notes, although the addition of RAG did not further enhance this task. 4️⃣ The study identified hallucination issues, where the model generated plausible but incorrect information when explicit details were not provided in the notes. RAG helped mitigate but not completely eliminate these errors. 5️⃣ The research demonstrated the feasibility of using open-source generative AI models like Llama 2 for clinical NLP tasks, offering a more adaptable and efficient solution than traditional methods requiring extensive training data.

Industry Update. Did you know that The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) have introduced a new definition of general practice for accreditation purposes, aiming to include innovative models of general practice care in the accreditation process. The new definition still requires a practice to be comprehensive, continuous, and GP-led. However, practices with limited scope, such as those focusing on one body system or disease or telehealth services that cannot offer in-person consultations, do not meet the new definition. Importantly the new definition does not impact practices that are currently accredited.
