Did you know that past forced adoption policies still impact many Australians today? Understanding these stories is crucial for professionals who support those affected. We’re proud to have partnered with Portable and the Department of Social Services (DSS) on a newly launched online training package for aged care and allied health professionals. Through our work co-developing and producing animations for this course, we helped ensure that the educational content resonates and sticks with the intended audience. By embedding narrative throughout the material, we aimed to make complex topics like trauma and recovery, approachable and relatable to the viewer. Hoping to elicit better contextualised understanding and empathy towards people in care who have experienced Forced Adoption practices in Australia. If you work with people impacted by forced adoption, this training offers valuable insights on how to offer support while avoiding re-triggering past traumas. Thanks to the incredible team at Portable, Willhemina Wahlin, Tess Waterhouse, Beth J Hyland and Adam Corcoran. Along with the stellar Advisory group for steering this, thanks to Nahum Mushin, Jigsaw Queensland Inc., Relationships Australia SA, Relationships Australia Tasmania, Relationships Australia WA, The Healing Foundation, VANISH. Healthcare professionals, do you remember what you were taught about how to deal with grief over your patients when you were in training? So much of healthcare culture has held up stoicism as strength, and pegged grief as something that just gets in the way of "real work." But what is healthcare, if not human work at the core? Tomorrow, I'll be presenting an online Grand Rounds for Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) on "Supporting Learners Experiencing Grief," together with the incredible Hadley Bloomhardt and Sarah Tremallo, LCSW from Boston Children's Hospital. We are proposing a different way of training and supporting our youngest clinicians in healthcare. We can be human. This can be a path towards higher quality healthcare, and more sustainable journeys as professional caregivers. We can care for ourselves and each other differently. I am full of hope.
