Carbohydrates have an unfair reputation! Years of diet culture have named all carbohydrates as unhealthy, but the reality is that the human body needs this food group to survive. In fact, most of our daily calories should come from carbohydrates. Nonetheless, the nutritional profile of carbohydrates varies greatly depending on the source. Processed carbs, like white flour or table sugar, are often low in nutrients and fiber. This causes a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, and over time these spikes can contribute to the development of chronic inflammation in the body. However, carbohydrates in the whole form, typically found in fruits or vegetables, often have a nutritionally rich profile and are jam-packed with fiber. Fiber also protects against the development chronic illnesses like heart disease and certain cancers. Whole carbohydrates promote health and are necessary to fuel your body to do all the fun activities that you want to do! Emphasizing whole carbohydrates like fruits and whole grains in the diet will keep you feeling full and energized. However, in moderation, processed carbs are more than okay to include in your diet! Let's dive into the science: 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀: 𝟭. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺: - Carbs convert to glucose, raising blood sugar and insulin levels. 𝟮. 𝗙𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴/𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲: - Fat is stored during meals and burned when fasting. Long-term energy balance is key. 𝟯. Let’s also clear up what we mean by the word “diet.” When I refer here to a plant-based “diet,” I don’t mean a diet as in food-restriction-for-weight-loss. Diet here simply means the foods you habitually eat. The goal of a plant-based diet is to help you live a healthier, happier life in the long term. It’s a lifestyle choice, not a weight-loss program.
