NEWS | Yesterday, Mayor Steele accompanied by MP Vance Badawey, Chris Bittle, and Ian Hamilton from HOPA Ports announced two major projects in Port Colborne that are set to transform our local marine sector while protecting the Great Lakes. With the Green Shipping Corridor Program, we’re investing in cleaner technologies and building a more sustainable economy: ✅$13,822,550 million for the Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority to build a biofuel terminal ✅$6,049,800 million for Quebec Stevedoring (QSL) to install shore power, providing power charging facilities to enable vessels to recharge their onboard batteries while docked, reducing reliance on auxiliary engines, and minimizing emissions. These investments are part of our commitment to a sustainable supply chain that respects the environment while driving economic growth. Canada’s ports play a vital role in connecting communities and enabling trade, and through clean infrastructure, we’re creating a resilient, future-ready maritime sector. Together, we’re keeping our supply chains strong and sustainable.

The Altan Option agreement offers #EGT the opportunity to generate cash flow in a capital light manner by generating carbon credits. The market for voluntary carbon credits is projected to grow by a factor of 15 or more by 2030 as companies progress towards carbon-neutrality goals, and this agreement offers us an entry point into this high-growth market. Other European countries, particularly Scotland, already have a thriving carbon credit industry, generating credits from peatland sinks. 🌊 A Historic Move Towards Zero-Emission Ports!   The EPA's Clean Ports Program isn’t just funding infrastructure – it’s funding a cleaner, healthier future. This nearly $3 billion initiative will finance shore power, electric cargo equipment, and advanced drayage truck projects across America, significantly impacting frontline communities. 🌎🚛   These grants support the work of organizations like EDF, which have long advocated for port decarbonization to reduce the environmental burden on low-income and minority communities. However, with $5 billion in requests left unfunded, we see a clear call for greater, ongoing investment.   Our journey towards zero-emission ports is underway, but continued collaboration among ports, companies, and policymakers will be crucial for future success. Maritime Industry Australia Ltd (MIAL) Conference was held this week in Brisbane, Australia, focusing on the opportunities available to transform the maritime sector, most notably the discussion around our biggest hurdle yet – reaching carbon-zero across the shipping industry.   Under the theme ‘Blueprint for a maritime nation’, there were a number of panels held throughout including those that we, ANL, had the privilege in participating in:   Policy certainty and a competitive business environment panel: Our General Manager Business Development & Inland Business, ANL - Chris Schultz, joined the discussion around the formation of the strategic fleet policy and how it will help rebuild Australia’s Commercial maritime capability.   Industry progress - electrification, Alternative Fuels and the Road to Decarbonisation panel: Our Senior Marine Manager ANL - Andrew Stewart, discussed our commitment to decarbonisation through the orderbook of 119 new dual-fuel vessels, in our fleet by 2028 and ready to use low-carbon energies such as biogas, biomethanol and synthetic fuels.   With so many interesting topics discussed that are pertinent to how Australia will progress into the future we were pleased to participate in this year’s conference.   #decarbonisation #mial #strategicfleet #actingforplanet #betterways

More good news coming from European Green Transition where this morning we have agreed an exclusive option agreement to investigate the potential to develop a peatland carbon sink programme, which could in turn generate valuable carbon credits. The deal allows #EGT to perform due diligence at the Altan farm in #Donegal, an area that - you might expect - is very close to my heart. The Altan carbon credit generation project has the potential to be one of Ireland’s first peatland carbon sink projects, and could also be the first step in a business model of both generating and trading carbon credits that could be scaled up in the years and months ahead. Ports must understand the regional variations in play and engage early and continuously to ensure they acquire the resources and partnerships needed for large-scale infrastructure projects. This means looking beyond traditional stakeholders and collaborating with renewable energy developers, water authorities, and grid operators. Today marks the launch of Scotland's first shore power facility for offshore energy supply vessels at Montrose Port, a joint effort between Montrose Port Authority and Plug | Shore Power & Maritime Charging. 🎉 Captain Tom Hutchison, Chief Executive of Montrose Port Authority, expressed his pride for achieving this port milestone, stating: "The launch of shore power at berths 1 and 2 represents a transformative moment for us at Montrose Port Authority and the wider Scottish maritime industry. “By embracing innovative solutions like shore power, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also positioning Montrose Port as a leader in sustainable port operations."
