The updated House version of the BIOSECURE Act has added WuXi Biologics to the target list, which now has five companies. Following our recent third-quarter highlights, I'm excited to share more from the Jefferies Healthcare Conference! 🚀 Our focus at Jefferies has been on the progress we're making in our mRNA pipeline. The enthusiasm around our advancements in mRNA therapies is truly inspiring. Key topics we discussed: 🔬 Pipeline Progress: Oncology: Our glioblastoma program is showing promising early Phase 1 results. We're also planning to expand into other cancers, including a new squamous non-small cell lung cancer program entering Phase 1 in late 2025. Infectious Diseases: We're advancing our program for urinary tract infections (UTIs) based on strong preclinical data. Our partner GSK is moving the seasonal influenza program to Phase 3, aiming for better protection against influenza A and B strains and has initiated a combination program targeting both Covid and Influenza. I'm incredibly proud of the CureVac team and grateful for the interest from the investment community. These pipeline advancements show our dedication to using mRNA technology to improve patient care and tackle major health challenges. Onwards and upwards! 💫

Advanced Therapies Europe kicked off in Estoril last week with an investment morning featuring panel discussions and Q&A sessions. An interesting insight from one VC was that there are a lot of AAV companies looking for initial seed funding. The advice to them was to either have a novel technology or a de-risking strategy to address the issues that have been causing problems in the clinic. Ascend has a proprietary production platform that generates higher quality AAV vectors. This means potentially more potent vectors with fewer side effects caused by empty or defective interfering particles. Sounds like a good place to start for gene therapy companies looking to de-risk their development pathway.

Trail of AAVs from an AAV veteran... Hannah Glazier and I got to sit down with Paul Wille from Abeona Therapeutics to discuss all things AAV drug development and the rollercoaster the modality has been on over the last few years. Have a look at the top takeaways: Targeting and Delivery Challenges The effectiveness of AAV as a gene therapy vector is heavily influenced by its ability to target specific tissues. Initially, AAV was successful in treating liver and eye diseases due to its ability to localize delivery effectively in these organs Emerging Technologies and Opportunities Advances in machine learning and automation are expected to enhance AAV vector development by optimizing delivery and overcoming natural capsid limitations. Additionally, there is potential for AAV to be used in combination with newer gene-editing technologies like CRISPR, although fitting these complex systems into AAV vectors and ensuring effective delivery remains a challenge. Market Launches Successful commercial launches of AAV-based therapies, such as Zolgensma for SMA and Luxturna for LCA, have set a precedent in the rare disease space. However, achieving broader success requires addressing unmet medical needs with clear efficacy and a favorable toxicity profile. What do you think?
