  • MEDIA RELEASE | The City of Port Colborne is committed to ensuring emergency services are well equipped and resourced to respond when our community is in need. After a careful review our community’s fire services needs, city staff and Council have determined that the City of Port Colborne will not move forward with a shared services agreement for emergency fire services with the Township of Wainfleet. Throughout this process, several residents, firefighters, and community members offered their feedback on the prospect of sharing fire administration services with the Township of Wainfleet. This insight and input were important factors in the City’s decision to not move forward. The City is proud to welcome Chief David Wood, new interim Fire Chief for the City of Port Colborne’s Fire Department. Chief Wood previously served as Fire Chief for the City of St. Catharines and comes to his new role with 30 years of experience in fire suppression and emergency services administration. The City would like to sincerely thank Chief Morgan Alcock and Deputy Chief Shawn Shutten from the Township of Wainfleet for their service to Port Colborne over the past several months. The City hopes the entire community will join firefighters and city staff in welcoming Chief Wood to our community when he begins on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

  • NATIONAL DAY | On December 6, 1989, a devastating act of misogyny at Polytechnique Montréal claimed the lives of 14 women. In 1991, Canada designated this day as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Today, we honour their memory and stand in solidarity with all women, girls, 2SLGBTQI+, and gender-diverse individuals whose lives have been tragically cut short by discrimination, hatred, and gender-based violence. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the work still needed to build a world free from such injustices.

  • SURVEY RESULTS | Lions Field, situated in the heart of Port Colborne, is a vibrant community hub frequented by residents and various user groups. It serves as the annual venue for the Lions Club Carnival. Recognizing the significance of this public space, the municipality has undertaken the Lions Field construction project to enhance its appeal and functionality. In November, a public opinion survey was announced and community feedback was requested to help determine which of four possible mural designs would be chosen for an existing building facing Killaly Street West. Each proposed mural incorporated several design elements, including a lion to represent the Lions Club, baseball players, the Port Colborne landscape and notable aspects of the Lions Carnival. The overarching goal of the mural is to convey a positive atmosphere that reflects community spirit. The winning mural design, chosen by popular vote is design option 2. Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey!
