At Port of Roenne, we’re dedicated to driving Bornholm’s development and fostering a sense of community. In 2024, we’re proud to support a wide range of local initiatives and organizations, spanning business development, cultural events, and social activities. Our contributions include support for Offshore Center Bornholm, Folkemødet, Tilflytterservice, Bornholms Mosteri, Bornholms Kulturuge, Bornholms Træbådelaug, and Rønne Havbad. We’re also thrilled to announce that we will be the primary sponsor of the PostNord Danmark Rundt cycling race, which will come to Bornholm for the very first time in 2025. Each year, our employees select two projects or organizations to receive additional financial support. For 2024, the chosen beneficiaries are Blå Kors Bornholm and Kvindekrisecenter Bornholm, each receiving 25,000 DKK. “As a key player on Bornholm, we focus on supporting social projects that make a real difference for those in need. I’m proud of our employees for choosing to back these vital initiatives,” says Lars Nordahl, CEO of Rønne Havn. Blå Kors Bornholm plans to use the donation to create meaningful experiences for children and families affected by substance abuse, while Kvindekrisecenter Bornholm will provide essential items to women and children seeking refuge. In total, Rønne Havn is contributing over one million DKK to Bornholm’s communities in 2024. Together, we’re building a stronger, more connected island. ;-)

Port of Roenne was yesterday awarded the ESG Transparency Award, presented by EUPD Research. "Climate and sustainability have never been more critical than they are today, as we race against time to mitigate the increasingly evident consequences of climate change. This award acknowledges that as a pioneering organization, we have not only recognized the importance of sustainability reporting but have also translated it into concrete action. Furthermore, it confirms that local efforts are noticed and appreciated on an international level," says Lars Nordahl, CEO of Port of Roenne A/S. As part of the ESG Transparency Award, Rønne Havn was evaluated on five key areas, including the port's work with transparency, governance, compliance with regulations and standards, social responsibility, and environmental efforts. Overall, Rønne Havn achieved the "Predicate Class," the second-highest category for performance across these five areas. "Making our sustainability work visible is an ongoing process where we continuously learn and improve. The journey we undertake as a company is central to our efforts and has become an integral part of our daily operations, with everyone contributing to rethinking routines and finding more responsible solutions to become a more sustainable port," says Lars Nordahl. Port of Roenne's sustainability efforts are documented annually in a dedicated ESG report, highlighting the progress the port has made or plans to implement. As a significant player on Bornholm, this award also serves as motivation for Port of Roenne to continue strengthening its local position as a frontrunner in sustainability. Head of ESG and Sustainability at Port of Roenne, Susan Hansen, has in collaboration with Business Center Bornholm, initiated a network for Bornholm-based companies and organizations working strategically with ESG reporting.

Port of Roenne: Future-Proofing for the Benefit of Bornholm We’re proud to announce that Port of Roenne A/S has successfully completed the third phase of our harbor future-proofing project! This milestone is a crucial step in ensuring the Bornholm’s supply security and strengthening the island’s resilience to future climate challenges. It’s inspiring to see the island’s community recognize the importance of this project – not just for Bornholm as a whole, but for its central commercial harbor. Lars Nordahl, CEO of Port of Roenne A/S: "It is essential for Bornholm that we future-proof Port of Roenne to ensure supply security and climate-proof the island’s central commercial harbor. The contractor MT Højgaard Danmark has completed and delivered the third phase of future-proofing Port of Roenne. With an expanded project area of 100,000 m², this phase contributes to strengthening the harbour’s unique position in the Baltic Sea as the central hub for wind turbine shipments. The third phase is closely aligned with an overall climate and futureproofing initiative for the island’s main commercial harbour. This includes extending the outer breakwater and improving navigation with a larger turning basin. Additionally, the future-proofing project features a new multi-functional quay and extensive dredging in the inner harbour area. Together, these efforts support the overall supply security for Bornholm and bolster the harbour's role as the island's primary commercial harbour. “With the completion of phase 3, we have taken an important step in strengthening Bornholm’s supply infrastructure, while also ensuring we can continue to grow offshore wind shipments from Bornholm, now capable of handling two concurrent projects. It’s a significant day for both Bornholm and Rønne Harbour,” says Lars Nordahl, CEO of Port of Roenne A/S. MT Højgaard completed phase 3 precisely on schedule. “When we signed the contract for phase 3, we knew we would be under significant time pressure. This was indeed the case throughout the project. However, thanks to an excellent collaboration between Rønne Harbour, their consultant NIRAS, our consultant Rambøll, and a skilled and dedicated project team at MT Højgaard Danmark, we succeeded in delivering a remarkable result on time. We can all be proud of this accomplishment,” says Dan Harborg Locht, Project Director at MT Højgaard Danmark. The future-proofing initiative has also benefited local businesses. MT Højgaard has spent nearly DKK 60 million locally on Bornholm, engaging local subcontractors and employing local labor.

There is strong support for cruise tourism on Bornholm among the island's residents, who view the arrival of cruise ships as valuable and positive. This is shown in a survey of Bornholm residents’ attitudes toward cruises. The cruise season has just concluded, and it once again highlighted the strong local support. With over 60 cruise ship visits, the island’s trade and attractions have benefited from the increased activity, which, according to the residents, creates value and strengthens Bornholm as an attractive tourist destination. The survey, conducted by the analysis firm Opinion & The Other One, shows that a majority of Bornholm residents see cruise tourism as an advantage for the island’s economy and tourism profile. Shops, cafés, restaurants, and attractions in and around Rønne especially benefit from the many visitors, but cruise guests also contribute both revenue and attention that enhances Bornholm's position as an attractive tourist destination. Besides the economic benefits, Bornholm residents also see cruise tourism as an important factor in the island’s marketing. The many international guests visiting Bornholm through cruises bring the island’s charm back home, generating increased interest in the island as a travel destination. “The 2024 tourism season has successfully highlighted Bornholm’s strengths as a cruise destination in Denmark and the Baltic Sea region. It is therefore also very positive that there is strong support for cruises on Bornholm. We see cruises as an important business area that can strengthen and develop Bornholm as Denmark's best tourist destination,” says Jeppe la Cour, Commercial Director at Port of Roenne A/S. Destination Bornholm also welcomes the strong support for cruise tourism on Bornholm. “It is pleasing that the vast majority of Bornholm residents see positive value in cruise tourism. This is also the feedback we receive from much of the Bornholm tourism industry. Cruise tourism creates value for Bornholm, including for retail, restaurants, artisans, and attractions, but also for business groups that may not be immediately visible to the average Bornholm resident, such as bus companies and guides. Finally, cruise guests contribute to activity outside of the summer season, which is part of Bornholm's tourism strategy,” says Gitte Tvilling, CEO of Destination Bornholm.

Port of Roenne A/S genopslog dette
Large pipes are quite an unusual sight at the port in Roenne and there is a solid reason for that. The Dutch company Van Oord has set up operations at the habour, preparing for the shipment of massive foundations for a new wind turbine project in the Baltic Sea. This exciting project will run well into 2025 and requires local workforce support and contributions from local suppliers. One of the first tasks is establishing sandbanks to support these impressive foundations. The port previously managed foundations for Arcadis Ost 1. "The current foundations are enormous steel structures, resembling over-sized straws. At nearly 100 meters in length and 10 meters in diameter, these structures are driven into the seabed to stabilize the tower, turbine, and blades that will be mounted on top,” says Jeppe la Cour, Commercial Director at Port of Roenne A/S. Once at Roenne, these elements are securely stored, minimizing the risk of delays when it’s time for transport. When they’re ready for deployment, each foundation is capped at both ends and transported to its final position on the water, where a specialized vessel manages the installation. Local businesses are set to benefit from this project, both through the creation of sandbanks and logistics support. Each foundation weighs up to 2,000 tons, requiring robust storage solutions at the harbor. “Local companies have the chance to contribute, as we’ll need resources like sand and stone sourced locally. Past projects have shown that involving local vendors is both viable and beneficial for all parties,” adds Jeppe, who also serves on the board of Offshore Center Bornholm - a network for offshore-linked businesses in the region.
