📚 Why Literacy Matters: Breaking Barriers for Marginalized Communities I had the honor of collaborating with two of the founders of #theNashvilleBlackLiteracyCoalition , Tiffeni Fontno, Ed.D. Ashford Hughes Sr. and Eno Richardson, M.Ed. Their mission is about empowerment, equity, and breaking generational cycles. The events and discussions at the United Nations General Assembly 2024 have reignited a profound hope within me that the future is indeed bright. The unwavering commitment I witnessed toward building a more equitable and sustainable world reaffirms that we are on the right path. As a representative of Black Sisters in STEM at the WORLD WOMAN FOUNDATION’s #UNGA2024 event, I had the privilege of delving into transformative ideas for an equal future for #women and #girls. The convergence of global leaders made one thing abundantly clear: the future of science, sustainability, and gender equality is ours to actively shape. And at Black Sisters in STEM, we are addressing these challenges by creating pathways through scholarships, mentorships, and internships for Black women in STEM across the globe to thrive in their careers. 💡 Did you know? Black women make up 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 2% of the U.S. #STEM workforce, and similarly low figures globally despite their invaluable contributions to science and #innovation. We are committed to closing this gap and ensuring that Black women not only participate in #STEM fields but thrive within them. As we engaged in discussions centered around this year’s theme—Science, Sustainability, and an Equal Future—our mission to equip Black women with the tools and opportunities to succeed has never been more urgent. 🌟 Our first day at the Single Vue Academy STREAM Camp was truly inspiring! The "Design an HBCU" mobile app project powered by MAD-learn had our Black and Brown scholars deeply engaged in computational thinking while celebrating the rich culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Here's a glimpse of the incredible experience: 1️⃣ Exploring HBCU History: Scholars delved into the rich history and significance of HBCUs, learning about their profound impact on Black culture and education. This foundation set the stage for our project, instilling pride and purpose. 2️⃣ Brainstorming App Ideas: Students collaborated to brainstorm unique features that reflect HBCU culture, such as virtual campus tours showcasing historical landmarks and student life. This creative process ignited their passion for design thinking. 3️⃣ Planning the App: Scholars mapped out their ideas, outlining the app's key components and functionalities. This phase fostered critical thinking and teamwork, essential skills in computational thinking. ✨ Witnessing our students embrace technology and heritage simultaneously was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. We are nurturing the next generation of tech innovators who are rooted in their cultural identity. 🚀 Parents and educators, let’s keep this momentum going! 🌟 Inspired by Innovation: Discovering MILO, a Black-Owned EdTech Pioneer 🌟 While I didn’t attend AfroTech this year, my curiosity led me to an incredible discovery—MILO, a Black-owned EdTech company that’s changing the face of education. MILO’s mission is clear and powerful: to close learning gaps for underserved students by equipping educators with tools that foster equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness. Their platform offers online teacher training, empowering educators to create learning environments that celebrate diversity and promote meaningful connections with students. With over 550 certified teachers and nearly 280,000 students impacted, MILO is proving that when we invest in educators, we invest in the future. From webinars to panel discussions, they’re not just talking about diversity—they’re taking action to reshape education for generations to come.
