When you think of a hero 🦸♂️, who comes to mind? The (sad) reality is that for many, the heroes are male figures...This perception highlights a significant issue: the underrepresentation of women. I had the pleasure of being invited as a guest speaker to the first edition of #WeConnect STEM Summit at Philip Morris International earlier today, alongside our Chief Diversity Officer Mimi Kurniawan. As the executive sponsor of Win STEM, a local chapter of one of our Employee Resource Group (ERG), I highlighted the role we have as individuals and organizations in battling gender disparities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The reality is this issue won't be solved by policies or programs alone. This is why today’s event was pioneering a new movement, by bringing together students, academia and colleagues from other diverse industries. Here are some ways we are #PMI is taking deliberate action: 👉 Creating a Culture: We deeply value an inclusive environment that encourages everyone to reach their full potential. Our Women’s Inspiration Network (WIN) was created to support, inspire, and empower women to do exactly that. 👉 Fostering Talent: We have implemented strategic ways to attract, retain, and grow female talent within our company. We ensure that these women have equal opportunities and are supported throughout all stages of their career with a series of resources and internal/external initiatives. 👉 Inspiring Others: While we are driven to making change in our own workplace, our overarching goal is to create a domino effect of action – inspiring companies around us to set their own standards for gender equality. We know the brilliant minds of women in STEM can no longer be overlooked. We must continue to break barriers, facilitate the exchange of ideas, and uplift women so they take on more leadership roles. We must be a driving force toward more equality in STEM. Today is International Women's Day, a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness and take action for gender equality in our industry. 🙌 I shared a post a few months back detailing some recent findings through research by Engineers Australia, highlighting key areas that need to be addressed to improve female participation within Engineering: - The main reason women don’t study engineering is lack of familiarity (there is little awareness of what engineering involves). 🤔 - A lack of positive perception (Engineering is seen as male-dominated and not impactful or fulfilling). 😒 - At university, students feel less supported to do well in their studies when compared to other degrees. 😳 - There are still significant issues for women with workplace culture and unequal opportunities. 😔 - Poor engagement of STEM with girls throughout schooling. 😖 These factors are not only disappointing, but detrimental to the diversity, quality, and innovation of the engineering profession, proving we still have more to do! Today I want to celebrate the women in my own network, who inspire me every day with their passion, creativity and resilience. You are the leaders, mentors, role models and friends that make this world a better place. Thank you for your hard work, dedication and courage. Since 1911, International Women's Day has been celebrated to promote awareness of women's rights and gender equality worldwide. This year's theme #InspireInclusion resonates deeply with us at TI, as inclusion is a core value for us. In Germany, only 16% of electrical engineering students are women, and just 38% of female STEM graduates immediately enter careers in these fields. To address this, we heavily invest in nurturing future female innovators through STEM education. However, we recognise that challenges extend beyond universities. That's why we support national and local STEM initiatives like Girls' Day, empowering STEM enthusiasts to create and innovate. Additionally, we take pride in supporting initiatives like BayFiD (Bavaria's Women in Digital Professions), aiding young women aged 18 to 30 in pursuing digital careers, along with the AmCham Female Founders Award. Promoting inclusion is a personal commitment for me, and I'm happy to contribute to a more diverse industry via TI. #TIEmployee #iwd2024 #womeninstem #inspireinclusion

I attended an engaging conversation on inclusion and inspiration at the #AsianVoice Women’s Day event this month. Having been a part of such events and conversations for the last few years, you hear the same issues being discussed. We know the solutions but there’s a long way to go from implementing these solutions and seeing the results. For every £1 of funding in the market only 2p goes to women entrepreneurs. What is it that they are doing that’s not selling the story? What are the mindsets and biases of the investor? What can be done to change perceptions of the investor to view the projects without prejudice? These are the questions and solutions that need to be worked upon along with the continued empowering of women to overcome the years of second class citizen conditioning. STEM and engineering roles are another area of concern. It will take over 70 years to bring parity if we don’t get more girls to take up these subjects now. So, what can be done? More role models of women in STEM and making the jobs more accessible? Another topic discussed was mentors and sponsorships. It is important to have one of each. However, people sometimes mistake one for the other. The main difference is that mentors are great for your mental wellbeing, as sounding boards to explore ideas and get second opinions. But to grow in your career you need a sponsor. A senior member of the organisation to take you on as an apprentice, to guide you through the career stages and be an advocate for you with other decision makers when you’re not in the room. To champion you as the next in line for growth. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You don’t have to be perfect at everything. If you’re perfect then there nothing left to learn and life becomes dull! Shared leadership - some jobs can be full on, it may be better to have another person to share the responsibility and give a different perspective or bring a new experience. For gender equality and equity to be a norm we need to involve everyone. Working in isolated groups is not the solution. Invest in Women to Accelerate Progress this International Women's Day Today we join the global community in recognising and celebrating the remarkable contributions of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Achieving gender equality, and supporting women irrespective of their choice of career or life path, is as crucial as ever for maintaining a healthy planet and building economies that are fair and prosperous. However, we still face a staggering $360 billion annual deficit in spending on gender equality measures. For that reason, the theme for the UN International Women’s Day 2024 is Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress. By investing in women, we invest in a bright future for everyone. Extraordinary women have triumphed across the field of audio-visual technology, driving forward progress that has positioned us where we are today. Examples include Hedy Lamarr, who - in addition to being a much-loved film star - was the inventor of a radio communications device which is a component of present-day satellite and cellular phone technology. Radia Perlman is a computer programmer and network engineer who’s development of the algorithm behind the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) earned her the nickname ‘Mother of the Internet’. Marian Croak, currently Vice President of Engineering at Google, advanced Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies, which enables calls to be made directly from digital devices. These women are proof that investing in women yields extraordinary innovations.
