I attended an engaging conversation on inclusion and inspiration at the #AsianVoice Women’s Day event this month. Having been a part of such events and conversations for the last few years, you hear the same issues being discussed. We know the solutions but there’s a long way to go from implementing these solutions and seeing the results. For every £1 of funding in the market only 2p goes to women entrepreneurs. What is it that they are doing that’s not selling the story? What are the mindsets and biases of the investor? What can be done to change perceptions of the investor to view the projects without prejudice? These are the questions and solutions that need to be worked upon along with the continued empowering of women to overcome the years of second class citizen conditioning. STEM and engineering roles are another area of concern. It will take over 70 years to bring parity if we don’t get more girls to take up these subjects now. So, what can be done? More role models of women in STEM and making the jobs more accessible? Another topic discussed was mentors and sponsorships. It is important to have one of each. However, people sometimes mistake one for the other. The main difference is that mentors are great for your mental wellbeing, as sounding boards to explore ideas and get second opinions. But to grow in your career you need a sponsor. A senior member of the organisation to take you on as an apprentice, to guide you through the career stages and be an advocate for you with other decision makers when you’re not in the room. To champion you as the next in line for growth. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You don’t have to be perfect at everything. If you’re perfect then there nothing left to learn and life becomes dull! Shared leadership - some jobs can be full on, it may be better to have another person to share the responsibility and give a different perspective or bring a new experience. For gender equality and equity to be a norm we need to involve everyone. Working in isolated groups is not the solution. It needs to be a business objective not a nice to have point in your HR policy. #inspireinclusion #genderequity #genderequality #stem #mentors #sponsors #sharedleadership #internationalwomensmonth #Royalairforce Rupanjana Dutta

To rectify the gender disparity in #STEM, we must go beyond increasing awareness. This piece from Kath Mackay in Forbes explores the importance of early-stage support and addressing the systemic issue in STEM and beyond. Encouraging women in the company to showcase skills and abilities beyond their current role, focusing on mentorship, and learning how to have important conversations when the stakes are high are strategies that can help empower our next generation of women in tech. https://lnkd.in/gv_KWxbK #womeninbusiness #womeninstem #leadership

Want to get further, faster in business and life? Let's learn from a "manel". 👉🏻 Manel: a zero gender diversity, all-men panel On so many levels, the signaling is just wrong. - Success in business and life is only for men because, no, women can't have it all. *** My recent research on Gender Diversity and Innovation Efficiency yielded mixed results. The number of women, like other minority groups, needs to cross a threshold before their voices will be heard. i.e. can't have too few. The bad news is more diversity can also lead to more conflict, so there's a limit before the costs outweigh the benefits. i.e. can't have too many. A perfect double-bind situation with no easy answer. This complex issue requires more studies but at the heart of it all... Representation matters. For instance, did you know that women in high-income countries are 17% less likely to enroll in STEM courses due to the lack of female role models? In countries where everyone has equal access to education, economic and career opportunities remain elusive to women, as some systems feel like "old boys club?" *** So on one hand, as we encourage women to step up, be bold, and achieve success in both business and life, don't forget the subliminal messages we're sending. At the end of the day, role modeling is a powerful vehicle for social change... All the talk about gender diversity and equality is useless... Unless we put a stop to tone-deaf events. P.S. I'm not a feminist, but a firm believer in diversity and equality. The research speaks louder than my anecdotal experience. P.P.S. The event described above is real.

I'm a woman of colour in #STEM… of course, I’ve faced barriers, been stereotyped, and disadvantaged because of my identity. It is no secret that living as a #woman comes with its suitcase of challenges. Add in belonging to underrepresented groups such as women of colour in STEM and that suitcase becomes significantly heavier to carry. I’m certain I’m not the only one who has experienced this: Sitting in the audience listening to a panel discussion and not seeing many people like me on the panel or even in the room. Then wondering “Am I in the right room?” “Do I have what it takes to even be here?” “What if someone realizes I’m not good enough to take up space here?” The truth I am in the right room! I do have what it takes to be in the room! And the only person that matters if I am good enough is me! By stepping into my power, I can #InspireInclusion – the theme for #IWD this year. Inspiring Inclusion calls for action to break down barriers, challenge #stereotypes, and create environments where all women are #valued and #respected. IWD is a powerful reminder of the progress made towards #genderequity. But this is also a reminder of the work that still needs to be done, the rooms that still need our voices as women and the actions towards gender equity that still require energy from everyone. We need to move beyond words to action. Such as: #Mentoring, #sponsoring and #coaching females Ensuring all women and girls have access to quality education Supporting women and girls into #leadership, #decisionmaking roles, business and STEM Only then do we stand a chance to carry a lighter suitcase. All of us can make a difference in creating an equitable world where women are #empowered, valued, and belong. #womeninstem #genderequality #womenshistorymonth

“Find your niche.” “No” In a world that often preaches the mantra of finding one niche and sticking to it, I stand as a living testament to the power of defying conventional wisdom. As an 26 year old entrepreneur overseeing not just one, but six companies, my journey has been anything but traditional. My work spansacross diverse realms, from mental health and gender equality to education, STEM, sustainability, youth advocacy, and beyond. From the outset, I've been bombarded with advice to narrow my focus, to specialize in a single area and become an expert within its confines. But for me, such a singular path has never felt authentic. My soul is fueled by the intersectionality of issues, by the interconnectedness of seemingly disparate causes. I refuse to compartmentalize my efforts or confine myself to the limitations of a single niche, because to do so would be to deny the complexity of the human experience and the multifaceted nature of the challenges we face. For too long, society has perpetuated the myth that success can only be achieved through specialization, through tunnel vision that blinds us to the broader context in which we operate. But I've come to realize that true innovation, true impact, lies at the intersection of disciplines, where ideas collide and new possibilities emerge. My commitment to intersectionality isn't just a professional ethos; it's a reflection of who I am at heart. My work in mental health informs my approach to sustainability, just as my advocacy for gender equality influences my strategies in education. Each endeavor informs and enriches the others, creating a holistic tapestry of impact that transcends the sum of its parts. But make no mistake: navigating multiple fields isn't easy. It requires flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty. It means wearing many hats, juggling competing priorities, and constantly seeking out new perspectives. But for me, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. As I look to the future, I remain committed to my path of intersectionality, knowing that it's not just a strategy for success, but a reflection of my deepest values and aspirations. #entrepreneurship #womeninleadership #womeninbusiness #womenexecutives

The events and discussions at the United Nations General Assembly 2024 have reignited a profound hope within me that the future is indeed bright. The unwavering commitment I witnessed toward building a more equitable and sustainable world reaffirms that we are on the right path. As a representative of Black Sisters in STEM at the WORLD WOMAN FOUNDATION’s #UNGA2024 event, I had the privilege of delving into transformative ideas for an equal future for #women and #girls. The convergence of global leaders made one thing abundantly clear: the future of science, sustainability, and gender equality is ours to actively shape. And at Black Sisters in STEM, we are addressing these challenges by creating pathways through scholarships, mentorships, and internships for Black women in STEM across the globe to thrive in their careers. 💡 Did you know? Black women make up 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 2% of the U.S. #STEM workforce, and similarly low figures globally despite their invaluable contributions to science and #innovation. We are committed to closing this gap and ensuring that Black women not only participate in #STEM fields but thrive within them. As we engaged in discussions centered around this year’s theme—Science, Sustainability, and an Equal Future—our mission to equip Black women with the tools and opportunities to succeed has never been more urgent. It's time to shape a future where the diversity of women in #STEM reflects the rich diversity of our world. Together, we can build a more sustainable and equitable future! #UNGA2024 #science #sustainability #genderequality #STEM #blacksis #women #girls #blackwomeninstem #equalfuture

🌟 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 21𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲: 𝐌𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 🌟 Growing up in the 21st century has been a unique blend of opportunities and challenges. As a woman, I've experienced firsthand the evolution of societal norms and the ongoing fight for gender equality. Here’s a glimpse into my journey: 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬: 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 From a young age, I was encouraged to dream big. 🌟 My parents instilled in me the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to, regardless of my gender. This foundation was crucial as I ventured into the world, armed with ambition and a desire to make a difference. 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 Education played a pivotal role in shaping my path. 📚 I was fortunate to have access to quality education and supportive teachers who encouraged me to pursue my interests in STEM fields. However, I quickly realized that being a woman in these traditionally male-dominated areas came with its own set of challenges. I often found myself having to prove my competence and commitment. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫: 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐚 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞 Entering the workforce was both exhilarating and daunting. 💼 I faced implicit biases and sometimes overt discrimination. However, I was determined to excel. I sought out mentors, both male and female, who guided me and helped me navigate the complexities of corporate life. Each obstacle became a learning opportunity, and I gradually carved out a niche for myself in the industry. 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤-𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐉𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 One of the biggest challenges has been balancing career aspirations with personal life. ⚖️ The expectations to excel professionally while also fulfilling traditional roles at home can be overwhelming. However, I’ve learned the importance of setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and seeking support from my family and friends. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 Being a woman in the 21st century means continuously evolving and adapting. 🌱 It’s about leveraging opportunities, overcoming challenges, and paving the way for future generations. I’m excited about the progress we’re making and remain committed to contributing to a world where everyone, regardless of gender, has the chance to succeed. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 To all the women out there, know that your journey is unique and valuable. Embrace your strengths, learn from your experiences, and never be afraid to pursue your dreams. Together, we can continue to break barriers and create a more inclusive world. 🌍✨ #WomenInLeadership #GenderEquality #21stCenturyWoman #Empowerment #Inspiration #CareerGrowth
