How can we empower leaders to leverage these insights in meaningful dialogues, fostering growth and aligning with organizational objectives? Jean's wisdom resonated with the importance of using psychometric tools judiciously to avoid constraining individuals. It's crucial to unlock their potential and facilitate self-realization. [Coaching A to Z: Letter E] The word I chose for the letter E is 'Else'. This four-letter word feels adolescent that it needs to grow a little before it can heft significant meanings. In fact, I didn't frequent this word as it made conversations rather messy with all the options and ideas it generated. The "else" option didn't fit nicely into the fifteen-minute appointment slots, and often, I skipped over "else-ing" with my clients. This reminds me of the anecdote of Steve De Shazer, one of the founders of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. One day, he was speaking at a conference when a participant asked, "What do you do when you've only got fifteen minutes to see the patient?" His answer, after a thoughtful pause, was: "Take your time. You've got the whole fifteen minutes." I’ve been immersed in The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer, a book that’s pofound. It offers actionable insights on how we can regain control of our inner energy and live with greater peace. One concept that truly resonates with me is the idea of how we use our energy every day, often without even realizing it. Think about this: How many times have you let a challenging interaction with someone—like a tense conversation with your manager—completely drain your energy and affect your mood for the rest of the day? That’s the real cost we often overlook: the depletion of our inner energy caused by resisting what’s happening in those moments. Let me share a more concrete example: Imagine you’re in a meeting with your manager, and they give you feedback that feels harsh or unfair. Instantly, your mind races with defensiveness and frustration: “Why don’t they understand me?” “They always criticize me!” These thoughts build resistance, and suddenly your energy is consumed by negativity. You carry the emotional weight of that conversation for hours, if not days. This resistance is what drains our energy. The tension, defensiveness, and frustration you feel aren’t just mental—they block the flow of your inner energy, leaving you feeling exhausted and stressed. In moments like these, instead of allowing the situation to unfold, you resist it by clinging to the belief that it shouldn’t be happening this way. But what if you could shift your perspective? Singer teaches us that the key is to let go. Instead of dwelling on the emotional reaction, we can choose to acknowledge the situation without attaching judgment to it. Yes, the feedback may be difficult to hear, but resisting it only depletes your energy. Letting go means accepting that the conversation happened that’s it. Here’s the transformational part: When you let go, you free up your energy and, you’re choosing freedom over the need to defend or justify yourself. The critical question is: What’s more important—what your manager said, or your inner freedom? When you let go, you reclaim your freedom to focus on what truly matters. This is what Singer calls staying open—keeping your heart and energy open, even when things don’t go as expected. It’s a powerful shift. Instead of letting difficult conversations with your manager or colleagues drain your energy, you learn to maintain inner peace by not resisting the moment. When you feel tension arising from a difficult interaction, ask yourself : Am I resisting this moment? Am I wasting my energy trying to control or defend myself? I encourage you to reflect on your own relationships, both professional and personal. Are there situations where you’re unknowingly draining your energy by resisting interactions that don’t go as planned? Letting go doesn’t mean giving up—it means freeing yourself to live and respond more intentionally. What’s more important—what someone else said, or your freedom?

[Coaching A to Z, Chapter I: Instead] I often get this question from learners: “What do you do when a client keeps complaining?” My usual answer is: “What did you hear that they seem to care about?” It’s easy to label someone (your family, friends, colleagues, or clients) a “complainer.” Once we do, that’s all we might hear—just complaints. But if we pause and listen differently, something shifts. Complaints are often expressions of frustration or unmet needs, but beneath them leak their values, cares, and hopes. Behind every complaint is something deeper. Perhaps it’s about fairness, respect, connection, or progress. When we shift our listening from what’s wrong to what’s important to the person, we invite conversations that build and honour their hopes, cares, and values. Imagine the shift in perspective when we start to listen for what they deeply care about. What if every complaint is really a signpost pointing to something they want to protect or restore? Now, think about your own life. What are your current complaints? What are you most frustrated about? And, more importantly, what do those frustrations tell you about what truly matters to you? All it takes is the word: Instead. Instead of focusing on complaints, we focus on what they care about. Instead of getting stuck in what’s wrong, we explore what’s wanted and what’s working. That’s how one ordinary word does extraordinary work to shift entire conversations. How I Reduced Anxiety and Regained My Creative Mojo (and you can too!) May is #MentalHealthMonth, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental well-being. The story I have told myself is that my urge to clean up or get busy doing anything else that suddenly seems important is— that this is productive. Procrastination helps me create order and prime the canvas of my mind for doing deep work. (I still need to get primed, but there are other ways to achieve this.) But...  Like so many people since Covid, I have experienced more #stress and #anxiety than what I deem “normal” and my tendency for procrastination and perfectionism was getting out of hand. All of this was giving me insomnia. My Solution: Last winter, I embarked on a transformative journey to cultivate Positive Intelligence (PQ) to enhance my mental fitness. Through dedicated brain "muscle building" exercises using an app, I witnessed remarkable improvements in my health, sleep, and performance. Coaching Skills is on the rise! 📈 Finished delivering another coaching skills workshop for a room of middle managers. Partnered with Yeang Cherng Poh who was the chief architect for the program. ✅ Participants practice engaging in the use of #cliftonstrengths to complement and level up their managerial coaching skills. ✅ Participants practice “Catching People Doing Right” through a feedback tool. More than 50% of participants shared this was their biggest takeaway. 💥 ✅ Participants practice coaching for performance using a coaching tool and 2 different scenarios - high performing staff and underperforming staff. A good number found the tool practical and helpful. ✅ Participants practice differentiating“coach the person” vs “coach the problem” using a coaching framework and a tool. Several shared their aha moments from learning the distinction. Was absolutely delighted at the end after hearing all the participants shared one key takeaway. The feedback overwhelmingly went beyond our expectations. Very very satisfied in seeing the results. The lens of integrating #ontologicalcoaching with #strengthscoaching is so intriguing!
