Our Faculty Admissions Liaison program has definitely evolved over the past 3 years, and we’re further down the road on some of these ideas than others, but I agree with the author that faculty remain one of the best recruiting resources a college has to offer. With recent conversations with several colleagues in academic administration, we shared the sentiment that the conversation about the evolution of faculty work needs to be more overt, especially at small privates. How can we help faculty identify what can be taken off their plates? How can we be partners with faculty and empower them to create structural solutions to mitigate a bourgening workload? How can we educate faculty about the realities of a broken financial model in higher education and collaborate on solutions that maintain the integrity of academic programs while recognizing the realities of the marketplace?

One of the most rewarding and impactful activities that faculty can undertake is to provide career guidance, when students ask for it. This cannot replace the professional services that dedicated career centers offer to students, but it can support and enrich those efforts. Students facing difficult career choices benefit from getting direct input from their professors as trusted sources who have relevant experiences and expertise. It can also broaden students' horizons as they explore careers that might be better aligned with their traits, skills, and goals in life. Sadly, though, faculty are not always keen to provide career advice. They respond to their own academic career progression incentives that rarely, if ever, reward time-consuming and hard to quantify interactions with students, such as ‘career chats’ outside the classroom. These interactions also have a very long horizon to manifest any recognizable impact, making it less rewarding in the short run. I was lucky enough to have transformative conversations with a few of my professors in the engineering and business schools that I attended. These ‘career chats’ invariably altered the course of my career and life in positive ways. I am thankful to those dedicated and inspiring professors who took the time to have a cup of coffee with me and who broadened my perspective on career options with invaluable advice. I try to pay it forward by taking the time to chat with my students when they seek that kind of career and life advice from me. I think more students should seek this kind of important and potentially impactful advice from the professors whom they might have personally connected with. And more professors should take the time to offer guidance to their students on one of the most important decisions in their lives.

How surreal has it been using a book years ago in teaching what I thought would be a one off adjunct class, to then writing a chapter to an updated version of the book, and fast forward to then teaching with said book version this summer? Today, three national associations representing institutional research, business and finance, and information technology in higher education, released the Change With Analytics Playbook, a comprehensive resource designed to support institutions in creating a culture and capacity for strategic data use. This playbook outlines key principles and strategies to build a data informed decision culture in higher education. Very timely and important.

VJAS Save the Dates as We Prepare to Go Back in Person May 31, 2025   VJAS Symposium ‘25 will be Hybrid. This will allow students to attend in person and virtually on May 31 at Ferrum. How will we achieve this? 1.  VJAS Membership is Free. Join now. 2.  VJAS paper submission has been reduced to $35 with a due date submission deadline of February 21, 2025. 3.  The proposed registration package from Ferrum is being worked on but looks to be the following: A. The Day Registration Cost per Participant will be approximately $35, which includes the campus use fee, usage costs, and the cost of lunch for the participant. B. Overnight dormitory costs for students, chaperones, and parents will be determined later in January. C. In her "State of the Science" address, National Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt highlighted the critical need for strategic actions to uphold U.S. leadership in science. She stressed the importance of enhancing K-12 science education and cultivating a robust domestic STEM workforce, as well as the urgency of updating university-industry partnerships and integrating AI to bolster education. McNutt underscored the necessity of adapting the U.S. R&D model to remain competitive, especially as countries like China escalate their research investments. She called for strengthened public-private partnerships, particularly in AI, to ensure research benefits both commercial interests and the public good, cautioning against overlooking socially beneficial applications amid industry-led AI advancements. As we contemplate these insights, universities must proactively prepare for the AI era by modernizing curricula, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and prioritizing ethical AI development. Trauma-informed leadership has long been a focus of mine and a key aspect of how I approach higher education leadership, and I was thrilled to bring this topic to EdUp Accreditation Insights with hosts Laurie Shanderson, PhD, FACHE, and Leamor Kahanov. Thank you both for inviting me and for such an enriching conversation! It was truly an amazing experience. In this episode, we explore insights from my article, Building Resilient Leadership in Higher Education: Merging Trauma-Informed Practices with Key Presidential Competencies. My perspective on trauma-informed practices was deeply influenced by work I undertook with colleagues (Amy Rutstein-Riley, Jeffrey Meriwether, PhD FRHistS, Kimberly Lawler-Sagarin, Jon Ayabe, and Anna M. Fallon) in the AALI Senior Leadership Academy, where we connected these concepts to essential leadership competencies. It was inspiring to see how our project aligns with the recent study by Kevin R. McClure and Jorge Burmicky, Ph.D., which underscores key competencies of presidents and senior leaders often embrace to navigate the challenges and headwinds they face today. We delve into how modern higher education leaders can foster resilience, manage trauma-aware practices, and develop strategies to handle the complexities of academia. It was also a privilege to discuss how accrediting bodies can support these approaches, providing leaders with the tools they need to build inclusive, forward-looking institutions. 🎓📕To Academic Leaders 📖 In my opinion, effective communication and appreciation are essential in academia. They significantly impact faculty morale, and leaders in higher education must prioritize these aspects to create a positive and productive environment. Leaders, please share news and information to help faculty see the big picture and understand how their contributions align with institutional goals. Also, publicly acknowledge faculty achievements and show your appreciation for their efforts. By prioritizing effective communication and appreciation, academic leaders can create a positive work environment that boosts faculty morale, enhances student experiences, increases research output, and strengthens the institution's reputation.
