The landscape of public education is constantly evolving, encompassing a myriad of changes from demographic shifts among students to alterations in curriculum standards like the Common Core. These transformations also extend to broader policy shifts, such as Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty, which influenced schools in planning for students' nutritional needs, and the federal IDEA Act, mandating equitable education provision. The primary goal behind such policy modifications is to enhance student outcomes, ensuring readiness for college and careers, academic achievement, and regular attendance, ultimately shaping the future workforce. Despite the nature or rationale behind these changes, educational institutions often grapple with effecting substantial and enduring transformations. In light of this, I've penned this article to shed light on the challenges many districts face in implementing the latest change in our field – the science of reading. I firmly advocate that embracing the science of reading is paramount in educating our youth effectively. However, my concerns stem from the observed struggles during my tenure within school systems. I aspire that my observations and insights can offer guidance to those encountering obstacles in navigating this new educational mandate.

📘NEW REPORT: strong leaders in maxed-out public school systems need to find new solutions In our latest report from Paul Hill, Sarah McCann, Lydia Rainey, and Chelsea Waite, we explore how strong leadership in two of the nation’s largest school districts (Chicago Public Schools and Boston Public Schools) are making steady progress toward closing post-pandemic gaps in student learning, even in the face of financial, political, and capacity constraints. They’ve had to choose among imperfect strategies and navigate significant, growing challenges. This has meant taking risks, following strategies they might not be able to sustain, and wading deeper into politics than they’d prefer. However, these leaders have hit the limits of their systems—and will have to search for new options and forge alliances with new partners within school boards, unions, and state-level governments to keep moving forward. Climate justice is - and always has been - an education equity issue. Students of color and students from low-income backgrounds are much more likely to live in geographies that are polluted, are more vulnerable to climate and related health hazards, and are underfunded, with schools and classrooms that are ill-equipped to deal with extreme temperatures. These have obvious consequences on the consistency of student learning and academic outcomes, and students deserve better. The time for education leaders to become climate leaders is now.
