🔔Promising Progress, Fragile Foundations: The Canopy Project’s Five-Year Report on School Innovation Over the past five years, the Canopy Project, a joint effort by the Center on Reinventing Public Education and Transcend has documented how schools across the U.S. are innovating to meet the evolving needs of students and communities. From tackling post-pandemic learning gaps to addressing systemic inequities, Canopy schools offer a glimpse at a new future for K-12 education. This year’s report highlights key findings: ✔️Innovative schools are problem-solvers, leveraging diverse approaches to address equity and empower students ✔️Schools’ designs have been remarkably consistent from year to year. ✔️Blended learning practices surged during the pandemic and are now evolving. ✔️Schools are exploring artificial intelligence and co-leadership with families and students. ✔️Schools face sustainability threats like inadequate funding, staffing shortages, and restrictive policy barriers. Robin Lake of the Center on Reinventing Public Education describes some preliminary profiles of early-adopting districts based on research they are doing. CRPE will be putting out a full review of the data in early 2025. I paste the categories from Robin's preview below: 🛝 "Dabblers: Aspirational AI use, or primarily using AI to maintain “innovator” reputation. Allowing educators to use AI tools, but at this point, they lack a clear purpose and plan for spreading the use of AI in their district." 🎒 "Emerging Users: Encouraging the use of AI among educators and administrators, but adopting AI without a coherent strategic plan. Their AI strategies are disconnected from broader district goals, and professional learning is one-off and optional." 🏫 "System Changers: Have a clear vision for change, usually connected to a strategic plan, and using AI to help them with that vision." 🌤️ "Reimaginers: Rethinking what school can be in the age of AI, exploring how AI could fundamentally reshape every aspect of the educational system." "At this point, most early adopter districts fall in the Emerging Users category, but these categories are dynamic and show that AI adoption in education is not a monolithic process, but a complex, varied journey with different organizational approaches and levels of sophistication." My take: It is no surprise that most early adopters are in the Emerging Users category. I love to predict stuff, so Robin, if you do calculate a percent breakdown, this is my guess. A new report from my brilliant former (and current!) colleague. It is disheartening to see that information is STILL such a barrier to family access of good-fit, quality education options. Her recommendations are right though - we must center the experience of families impacted by low-quality schooling.

In an article published today by The 74 Million, our Executive Director Lauren Morando Rhim shares that families whose children have disabilities often end up in a “holding pattern,” and sometimes turn to an ESA-funded private school out of desperation, but that often means their children won’t be able to interact with non-disabled peers. Great article from Ashley Jochim and the Center on Reinventing Public Education highlighting the challenges families face when choosing within an ESA marketplace. Affirms Outschool.org work in South Carolina where 92% of families (all of whom are low-income) have opted in for our coaching and advising support to pick the best educational options for their kids. “Florida, for example, added 1,700 private schools to its voucher program between 2010 and 2020, and Arizona families using an ESA can choose from thousands of vendors, including private schools, tutors, and sports or arts programs.” “Navigating this rapidly evolving landscape without reliable information increases the risks that families will make high-cost mistakes,” Jochim wrote. “The search for a ‘good’ school can be time consuming, and when the chosen school disappoints, families must begin their search again.”
