The answer isn't one-size-fits-all. It truly depends on your company's way of doing business and its structure. Every company operates differently, and so does its sales and marketing teams. Here are some key considerations: 1. Sales Strategy: 👍Use Association: If your sales strategy is account-based, where multiple contacts from the same company interact with a single sales representative, it makes sense to associate contacts with their company. This allows the sales rep to have a holistic view of all interactions with the company, enabling better relationship management. 👎 Don't Use Association: If your sales strategy is contact-based, where each contact is treated individually and not tied to a company-wide strategy, it might be better to manage them separately to avoid unnecessary complications. 2. Team Structure: 👍 Use Association: If your team is structured so that specific sales reps or account managers are responsible for entire companies rather than individual contacts, associating contacts with their company ensures consistency and clarity in ownership. 👎 Don't Use Association: If your team is organized by territories or product lines rather than by accounts, it might be more effective to manage contacts independently, focusing on the specific product or service they are interested in. 3. HubSpot adoption is critical to its success. There's no point investing thousands into your CRM if none of your team are using it. There's also no point if your team are using it, but only because they're being forced to (or need constant reminding from leadership to update their notes). The data that goes in will be the bare minimum to check a box, and won't actually be that valuable in helping you make decisions long term. If you have an acquisition problem and a retention problem... Solve the acquisition problem first. If you think of this as a linear process, without customers flowing through your funnel you don't have data to fix how to keep people around.

The value of an SDR team is not just booking meetings. 🤩 It’s creating positive brand impressions with buyers. 🤝 It’s providing critical connective tissue between sales & marketing. 💪 It’s cultivating an internal talent bench. I believe in AI-powered SDRs who incorporate AI into their day-to-day to increase their span of control and pipeline productivity. I believe human buyers want to interact with human sellers. As long as those human sellers truly understand them and have something valuable to offer. Sadly, this approach seems to be getting rarer and rarer. The number one reason sales leaders tell me they don't know the funnel metrics off the top of their heads? Because they're in Hubspot / Salesforce. Quite often followed by an explanation of how they are going through a Salesforce to Hubspot transition, or in the process of tidying up the data. A good CRM is worth its weight in gold (appreciating software doesn't weigh anything) but sales leaders should be obsessed with the funnel metrics not waiting to get the answers from a software system. We at ZUZU Hospitality are doing exactly what Dharmesh Shah said HubSpot's product and GTM strategy was - Broad featureset and SMB focus. We just happen to do it for Hospitality. One more thing, we are doing it with an added layer of services components to take away the more complex bits such as Revenue Management. Thanks you Dharmesh Shah for articulating this strategy. Gives us early builders more confidence in what we are going for.

SaaS companies often fight each other on execution when what they should really be doing is trying to beat each other on strategy. Imagine this: you’re in a well-established market with three big players dominating the space. They’re locked in a bidding war on Google ads, even paying to show up on each other’s brand keywords. This only drives up their ad costs and makes Google richer. But none of these 3 players have an organic LinkedIn motion where they are educating and entertaining their ICP. Now, along comes a fourth, smaller company. Instead of joining the Google ad bidding war, they save their budget and take a different route. They decide to go all-in on LinkedIn, focusing on building their brand organically. The founder steps up, spending time on LinkedIn to educate and engage with their target customers. The founder hires a couple of folks from his ICP in his marketing team, who then help add to the momentum being built by the founder on LinkedIn already. Now, this strategy of opting for an organic LinkedIn motion instead of engaging in bidding wars on search could fail or take time to succeed. But if does succeed, then the fourth upstart could gain a serious edge in market, leaving the 3 legacy players scratching their heads as they continue their pricey ad war. Some of the worst Account Executives have one thing in common...   Buyers feel uncomfortable answering their questions.   These AEs are mostly doing the right thing:   - They're asking lots of questions - They're digging into priorities - They're asking about problems - They're not pitching too much etc.   But prospects just don't open up about anything real. They give short answers to questions.   Now, the best AEs are masters at...  Getting buyers to share STORIES   They don't pepper prospects with dozens of logic-based questions.   They phrase questions in a way that gets a buyer to open up about how they feel.   Here's an example:   Let's say you sell an HR solution. This solution helps combine all HR functions (payroll, recruiting, workforce management, etc.) in one place.   Your buyer is using a separate solution for all of those. ️ Bad way to dig for pain   "What don't you like about your current HR setup?" "What's the biggest challenge with your HR setup?" "How much time is your team spending every week manually processing payroll?" "How much do you like your current solution on a scale of 1-10?"   These aren't terrible questions. But they're vague and feel too much like an interview or interrogation.  A better way to dig for pain   Get more nuanced with questions. Get in the buyer's day-to-day.   1) Get specific with questions:   "When did you notice that your disconnected HR tools were a problem?" "Mind walking me through the last time you onboarded a new employee?" "When you want to run payroll, what feels harder than it should be?"   2) Ask great follow-up questions:   "Can you give me an example of that?" "Tell me more..."   3) Compare/contrast using customer stories:   "An HR leader earlier today was sharing a big focus on international hiring moving into 2025. The process required a lot of work from their team to set up hiring in new countries. And many countries were pretty fuzzy about the paperwork required.
