“Click to Cancel” is gaining traction because consumers are fed up with subscription overload. This shift is great for consumers but tough on content providers, as it pretty much guarantees higher churn. With resistance to paywalls also rising, and roughly 98% of users never subscribing, it’s clear we need to evolve beyond them. Unbundling premium content not only drives engagement and conversions but also improves user satisfaction. Content providers need to provide choice to users, in order to mitigate churn. Lots of interesting data points in this report, but the bit on "false election contributions" caught my eye as the political cycle hits hyperdrive here in the US (and other places). But it wasn't what I thought. I'd imagined from the write-up that this was tricking people into actually donating somewhere else or somehow exceeding donation limits, etc. It's much simpler: attackers are pretending to ask for campaign donations and are just stealing the money instead. Data brokerage is the wild west Basically an unregulated practice. Sure, there are some narrow controls around collection, aggregation,buying, selling and sharing of certain types of data, but these regulations are extremely limited. Its mind-blowingly easy to gather and share data on virtually anyone, even millions at a time, without hitting legal roadblocks. Now let's say we put civil rights and individual safety aside, privacy is essential to national security. Research at Duke found that companies widely and publicly advertise data on the open market regarding millions of Americans’ sensitive demographic information, political preferences and beliefs, and whereabouts and real-time locations, as well as data on first responders, government employees, and current and former members of the U.S. military. Data brokers gather identity information like race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation and income level; major life events like pregnancy and divorce; medical information like drug prescriptions and mental illness; your real-time smartphone location; details on your family members and friends; and where you like to travel, what you search online, what doctor’s offices you visit, and which political figures and organizations you support. Oh and there are Hundreds of data brokers that make selling this data their entire business model. Let's talk disaster prep and recovery. iOS 18 dropped yesterday, offering expanded integration of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) for select capable iOS devices on US carriers. With Hurricane Helene's devastating impact still fresh and recovery efforts ongoing across the Southeast, Hurricane Milton is shaping up to be a massive storm with the worst possible timing. Hurricane Helene's aftermath: At least 125 lives lost across southeastern states Over 1.5 million customers left without power Severe flooding in western North Carolina, submerging entire neighborhoods Massive cellular network disruptions affecting millions The FCC reported outages across six states, with over 1 million residents losing fixed broadband access and 886,139 subscribers without cell service. Major carriers are working tirelessly to restore services but face significant challenges. I've posted before about how NTN could be a game-changer for telecommunication disaster recovery efforts and its potential to lessen the strain on Cell on Wheels (COW) and Cell on Light Truck (COLT) teams trying to reach inaccessible areas. While iOS 18 came a few too late for Helene, it's here for Milton and future storms. For those with iPhone 14 or later, iOS 18's new Messages via satellite feature could be a crucial lifeline if cell networks fail. This allows you to contact loved ones even without cellular coverage. I highly recommend updating your devices and learning how to use this new functionality. It could be potentially life-saving during Hurricane Milton and future disasters.
