Let's talk disaster prep and recovery. iOS 18 dropped yesterday, offering expanded integration of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) for select capable iOS devices on US carriers. With Hurricane Helene's devastating impact still fresh and recovery efforts ongoing across the Southeast, Hurricane Milton is shaping up to be a massive storm with the worst possible timing. Hurricane Helene's aftermath: At least 125 lives lost across southeastern states Over 1.5 million customers left without power Severe flooding in western North Carolina, submerging entire neighborhoods Massive cellular network disruptions affecting millions The FCC reported outages across six states, with over 1 million residents losing fixed broadband access and 886,139 subscribers without cell service. Major carriers are working tirelessly to restore services but face significant challenges. I've posted before about how NTN could be a game-changer for telecommunication disaster recovery efforts and its potential to lessen the strain on Cell on Wheels (COW) and Cell on Light Truck (COLT) teams trying to reach inaccessible areas. While iOS 18 came a few too late for Helene, it's here for Milton and future storms. For those with iPhone 14 or later, iOS 18's new Messages via satellite feature could be a crucial lifeline if cell networks fail. This allows you to contact loved ones even without cellular coverage. I highly recommend updating your devices and learning how to use this new functionality. It could be potentially life-saving during Hurricane Milton and future disasters. We are praying for all those currently impacted and those who may be affected soon. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay connected. #DisasterPrep #HurricaneMilton #iOSSafety #NTN #NetworkResilience #5G #Verizon #TMobile #ATT

🚨 Next-Generation 911: Saving Lives in the Wake of Hurricane Helene 🚨 In a powerful example of how technology is transforming public safety, the recent use of Next-Generation 911 during Hurricane Helene highlights the critical role of advanced systems in saving lives. 🌪️📱 As North Carolina faced the impacts of the hurricane, the state’s Next-Gen 911 infrastructure enabled real-time location tracking and better coordination between emergency responders and those in need. This is a huge leap forward from the traditional 911 system, improving response times and the accuracy of emergency services in complex situations. Key takeaways: 📍 Location-based accuracy: Next-Gen 911 allows for pinpointing caller locations even when they cannot provide an address. ⚡ Real-time communication: Dispatchers can receive multimedia such as photos, videos, and texts from those in distress, providing valuable context for responders. 🛠️ Enhanced resilience: As seen with Hurricane Helene, the system is designed to handle the demands of large-scale emergencies, ensuring communities receive faster, more efficient help. This technology is a game-changer, especially as we face increasingly frequent natural disasters. It’s a testament to how GIS technology, real-time data, and modern infrastructure can make a life-saving difference. 🏆 Kudos to the teams behind these advancements and the IT professionals working tirelessly to improve emergency response systems. 👏 #NextGen911 #EmergencyResponse #GIS #TechForGood #Innovation #PublicSafety #HurricaneHelene #TechnologyInAction https://lnkd.in/gRCFcra9

When Hurricane Helene hit on September 12, it left a path of devastation that underscored the urgent need for resilient communication systems in disaster response. Infrastructure was crippled, with cell towers down, power lines destroyed, and entire communities left without connection. Tragically, hundreds of lives were affected, and the death toll climbed as immediate relief efforts were hampered by communication challenges. In the critical hours following the hurricane, first responders from FEMA, the American Red Cross, and the National Guard were deployed, striving to reach affected areas despite severe infrastructure damage. But with flooding, mudslides, and blocked roads isolating many regions, even the best-intentioned response teams faced significant hurdles in coordination. This disaster highlighted two key issues: 1. Lack of Interoperability: Disparate communication systems meant that different agencies couldn’t coordinate effectively, delaying aid. 2. Power Outages and Infrastructure Damage: Prolonged outages impacted radio repeaters and base stations, leaving teams without reliable communication. At C-AT, we’re committed to solving these exact issues with our ICRI (Incident Commanders’ Radio Interface). The ICRI bridges HF, VHF, UHF, LTE, satellite, VoIP, and POTS systems, creating a unified network across agencies, ensuring seamless communication even when traditional networks fail. Our plug-and-play technology empowers responders to communicate instantly and effectively, regardless of the equipment they use. In moments of crisis, lives depend on the ability to connect and coordinate. C-AT’s solutions are here to ensure that first responders, relief agencies, and government organizations can do just that—quickly, reliably, and without barriers. Let’s build a future where communication remains resilient, no matter the storm. #DisasterResponse #EmergencyManagement #InteroperableCommunication #CATSolutions

Top quality insights from Kentik's renowned internet analyst. Internet has become an essential utility in much the same way as power and water. But unlike power and water, we can see internet activity using observability techniques, and readily recognize the state of community and economic health. The impacts shown here will raise the call for better broadband internet options. Cellular networks can help by removing last-mile physical links, but still need backhaul and power, and were thus also impacted by this event. Non-terrestrial (satellite) is another alternative, though they can be capacity constrained and are not currently price-competitive. Best wishes and prayers going out to the folks of North Carolina, who have a long recovery ahead, rebuilding homes, infrastructure, and daily lives. Doug Madory Kentik #hurricanehelene
