#tesco hitting 28% market share, whilst #ocado being the fastest growing grocer for the eight month in a row, are the key take-outs from Worldpanel by Kantar's UK market data for 12 weeks ending 29th September released earlier today. 12-wk sales grew by 2.9%, slightly down the last 12-wk period figure of 3.0%%, with Grocery #inflation rising from 1.7% to 2.0% across the last 4 weeks. Tesco’s share has increased by a very impressive 0.6% points YoY, hitting the 28% mark for the first time since December 2017. Between that time and now #aldi and #lidl have increased their combined share from 12% to 17.9%. Tesco’s achievement of regaining their 28% share is a triumph, reflected by their first half results of profits increasing by 10%. #sainsburys sales growth of 5.1% is just short of Tesco’s 5.2%, as both retailers continue to enjoy success from their #loyalty prices and Aldi Price Match schemes. #asda continue to struggle – the implementation of new systems may be one reason for some availability problems seen in stores. #morrisons have stabilised their sales, with share flat YoY following many periods of share decline. The new Morrisons More loyalty prices seem to be resonating with their customers. Aldi’s sales and share decline may have bottomed out. Their YoY sales growth was only 0.3% in July, 1.7% points behind the total market. In this latest period, it is 1.8%, 1.2% points behind the total market. Some great new #christmas products have appeared in their stores ready for the key festive trading period, and right now there's an impressive #halloween range instore. However, Aldi will be somewhat concerned that the gap in market share between them and Lidl is now just 1.7% points. This has narrowed from 1.9% points in the last period and 2.3% points versus this time last year. The #online market grew by 3.5% over the last 12 weeks, ahead of the total market. The UK online grocery market is now worth £3.7 billion with 22.1% of households shopping for groceries online. Ocado are fuelling this, enjoying market leading sales growth of 10%. Expanding their #privatelabel range over recent months may have helped this as they look to offer great value-for-money products. Well, this is no surprise! Apart from the fact that we partner with Diageo helping them to drive incidence growth across vodka, gin and beer categories in the on and off trade, you only have to look at the 'average' bar to see that @Guinness 0.0 is taking the world by storm. Alcohol free beer used to taste as bad as it sounds, but this is clearly now not the case with @Guinness taking number 1 slot in the alcohol free beer category. UK soft-drink maker Britvic plc has rejected a £3.1bn takeover bid from Carlsberg Group , saying the Danish brewer was “significantly” undervaluing a group whose brands include Robinsons and Fruit Shoot. Carlsberg made an initial bid of 1,200 pence per share earlier this month, before sweetening its all-cash proposal to 1,250p, which London-listed Britvic rejected on June 17. As well as producing its own brands, Britvic is PepsiCo’s bottler in the UK. Carlsberg is PepsiCo’s bottler in Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Cambodia and Laos. The brewer of Kronenbourg and Tuborg said the acquisition of Britvic would offer it “long-term growth opportunities”. It said it was considering its position after Britvic rebuffed its second bid. The acquisition of Britvic would offer Carlsberg the opportunity to expand its drinks bottling in Britain, for both alcoholic and refreshing beverages products. Guinness 0.0 has surpassed Heineken 0.0 to claim the title of the UK’s biggest alcohol-free beer. Guinness 0.0 has seen its off-trade sales rise by nearly +110% to £33.2m in the past year [NIQ 52 w/e 13 July 2024]. Over the same period, Heineken 0.0 sales have only climbed by +4.2%, to £28.3m. According to NIQ, Guinness 0.0 overtook Heineken 0.0 at the end of March, based on 52-week rolling data, and has maintained its lead since. Rounding out the top five alcohol-free beers in UK retail are Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%, Corona Cero and Beck’s Blue. #lidl's record market share, and #tesco gaining the most market share, are the highlights from Worldpanel by Kantar's UK market data for 12 weeks ending 12th May released this morning. 12-wk sales grew by 3.6%, down from the last 12-wk period figure of 4.3%. The lowest rate of grocery inflation since Oct 2021 (2.4% across the last 4 weeks) is the main reason for this slight drop in overall sales growth. 12-wk grocery inflation, at 3.1%, is lower than the overall sales growth of 3.6%, suggesting a small increase in volumes across the market. Lidl have enjoyed yet another strong period with sales up 9.4%, hitting a record market share of 8.1%, now just 0.5% points behind no. 5 retailer, #morrisons. Lidl have increased their sales by a massive 74% compared to 5 years’ ago, whilst increasing their store numbers from 765 to 963 (ScrapeHero). This means their average sales per store have increased by around 38% since 2019. #aldi, meanwhile, are seeing much softer year-on-year comparables, with sales up just 2.2%, behind total market growth. Their average sales per store have increased by around 27% since 2019 – still a great result, but behind Lidl’s performance. Only 12 months ago, Aldi’s market share was 2.4% points ahead of Lidl. Now it is just 1.9%. Two main reasons cited for Lidl’s great performance currently are, firstly, the dynamic activity on their Lidl Plus App – now offering personalised and non-personalised discounts to their customers, and secondly, the stand-out performance of their in-store bakery (ISB). Kantar report that freshly baked bread, cakes, and pastries were in 25% of Lidl’s baskets in the last 4 weeks, with ISB volumes up over 40%. In March, Lidl overtook Tesco as the number one ISB retailer with an 18.2% share (Tesco 18.0%). Tesco continue their stellar performance with their market share increasing 0.5% pts YoY, the highest increase across all retailers. At a recent IGD conference the message from Tesco was upbeat – expect to see even more focus on value, quality, range, and loyalty/reward over the next 12 months. #sainsbury's are also enjoying a gain in market share, up 0.3% pts YoY, but #asda continue to struggle, with sales down 2% YoY and share down over 2% pts compared to 2019. They have just announced a new dark green brand identity focusing on fresh, value and “offers for all”, hoping this will give them the kick start they so desperately need. Kantar report that #privatelabel is growing ahead of #brands, now accounting for 52% of the market by value (the volume figure is over 59%). Premium-tier PL is growing at 9.9%. Tesco recently reported their “Finest” range is now a £2bn brand. Online sales are growing at 5.4%, fuelled by #Ocado's strong growth of 12.4%. They now hold a 3% market share within the London area. The latest trends are set to continue over the next 4-week period, and expect to see Lidl branding everywhere in the lead-up to, and during, #euro2024, as they are one of the main sponsors.

The discounters hitting a record combined share of 18%, and #lidl's sales growth percentage being over 3 times that of #aldi's are the highlights from Worldpanel by Kantar's UK market data for 12 weeks ending 14th April released earlier this week.   12-wk sales grew by 4.3%, similar to the last 12-wk period figure of 4.2%. Across this period, grocery #inflation was at 4.1%. This is the first time since June 2021 that the 12-wk sales percentage has exceeded the 12-wk inflation percentage, suggesting a recovery of volumes across the market. In the last 4 weeks, the inflation figure was just 3.2%.   Coincidentally, June 2021 was the last time that spend on promotion was at the level it has now risen to (29.3%), suggesting that the level of promotions is clearly linked to delivering volume growth in the market. The percentage of products on promotion differs across #brands (37.5% on promo) and #privatelabel (23.0% on promo) – both are growing at a similar rate.   #tesco continue to perform ahead of the market, growing share by 0.4% pts YoY. Having recently announced a 12.8% growth in annual operating profit, the combination of Aldi Price Match, Clubcard prices, and Everyday Low Prices is clearly working. Their share gap to the discounters combined has grown by 0.1% pt for the second period in a row. Impressive growth in their premium-tier private label range “Finest” as well – up over 15% YoY and now worth over £2bn per year.   #sainsbury's are the fastest growing of the big 4 supermarkets for the 7th period in a row with sales up 6.8%. Their recent introduction of the “Low Everyday Prices” campaign, to replace “Price Lock”, sees them totally replicating Tesco’s 3-pronged attack to stem the growth of the discounters.   This seems to be working – at least against Aldi, whose growth this period at 2.8% is the third lowest across the top 10 retailers. Tough YoY comparisons will be a factor in this (in April 2023 Aldi’s growth was 25%), but I do fear Aldi’s clear proposition is not so clear at the moment – with many branded products cluttering the store and a visible loss of the middle aisle general merchandise excitement.   On the other hand, visits to Lidl’s stores see continuing strong special buy themes, impressive country food themes, and (unique compared to Aldi) heavy promotion of the Lidl Plus app and enticing front-of-store bakery, now even featuring Lidl Deluxe product offerings.   #morrisons have maintained their YoY share for the first time since the middle of 2021. Their recently introduced Aldi & Lidl Price Match may have had a positive impact with their customers, along with a clear improvement in product availability. #asda continue to struggle however, with share loss of 0.6% pts YoY.   Online sales now account for 12% of the UK market, the highest share since July 2022. Ocado’s growth of 12.5% is market leading, whilst Tesco recently stated their online channel now accounts for 13% of their overall sales.

#morrisons growing ahead of the market for the first time since June 2021, and #asda falling to an all-time low share of 12.5%, are the key take-outs from Worldpanel by Kantar's UK market data for 12 weeks ending 3rd November released this morning. Due to have been released last Tuesday, covering the 12-week period to 27th October, Kantar have pushed back their reporting by a week to ensure that the whole Christmas 2024 trading period will be covered in one release. 12-wk sales grew by 2.3%, down from the last 12-wk period figure of 2.9%, with Grocery #inflation also at 2.3% across the last 4 weeks. Morrisons’ sales grew at 2.4%, marking the first time since June 2021 that they have out-performed the market. Their turnaround, under CEO Rami Baitiéh, who has just completed his first year in the role, still has some way to go – but better availability, keener prices, and more motivated staff have helped to get Morrisons’ mojo back. Performance at #asda remains lacklustre, with sales growth behind the market for the 18th period in a row. The recent head office redundancies will not be helping morale. Interim CEO, Lord Stuart Rose, has said the focus will be on availability, “front of store” (standards and staffing), and “price managing”. Somewhat similar to Morrisons’ recent approach – the fundamentals of retail are pretty simple really. #tesco continue to dominate the number one position, with sales up 4.6% YoY, accounting for 46% of the total sales growth across the entire market. #sainsburys sales growth continues to out-perform the market at 4.4%. Their recent half-year results (to 14/9) were impressive – grocery sales growing by 5.3% and underlying profits up by 3.7%. Their recent announcement that around 200 of their Aldi Price Match products will now be available in their convenience stores gained them a step ahead of the competition, and their top tier #privatelabel range “Taste the Difference” is flying, with sales up by 18%. I mentioned last period that #aldi’s sales and share decline may have bottomed out. With growth this period just 0.7% points behind the market, and share stable YoY, this appears to be the case. Some excellent new seasonal products, merchandised for the first time in a full run in most stores (as Lidl do), along with the return of stronger Special Buy themes, may be helping. Lidl remain the fastest growing “bricks & mortar” retailer, with Kantar citing their #freshproduce area as a driving force, growing at an exceptional 22%. Strong availability and some aggressive “Pick of the Week” offers will have helped. Finally, #brands are enjoying growth (4.9%) ahead of own label (2.7%), a turnaround from this time last year when private label was growing ahead of the market. Promotional execution in stores has taken a new level for brands this year, with digital displays as well as “framed” branded bays, and some great 3-D POS in larger Sainsbury’s stores. Might be costing the brands a bit of cash though...

Tesco accounting for nearly half of total market sales growth is the key take-out from Worldpanel by Kantar's UK market data for 12 weeks ending 1st September released this morning. A slightly shorter review this period as I take a break in sunny Paxos! 12-wk sales grew by 3.0%, up from the last 12-wk period figure of 2.3%, with Grocery inflation at 1.7% in the last 4 weeks. #tesco has achieved their highest market share since January 2022. Their £469M growth in sales YoY accounts for 49% of total market sales growth whilst #sainsburys growth contributes 29%. #asda continue to struggle with sales down % YoY. The rate of fall in share is escalating. In March this year their share was down by 0.5% points YoY (14.3% to 13.8%). By June it was down by 0.9% points. Now it is down by 1.2% points. The question is when will this bottom out? Plans are in place to improve store standards and availability, but will these be sorted in time for the golden sales period of Christmas? #morrisons performance has been steadily improving since the Spring, but they still lag behind total market growth. They recently jumped on the ‘loyalty card exclusive price offers’ bandwagon, announcing over 2000 More Card price promotions, and added more items to their ‘Aldi & Lidl Price Match’ scheme. This will help, but I can’t stop thinking that a renewed push on their long-time USP, that of the unique Market Street in-store concept, will help them differentiate and potentially gain new customers who are bored with most of the main supermarkets all taking similar strategies. #aldi’s growth rate has been behind total market growth for the last 8 periods. Granted, they are annualising against 17% YoY growth this time last year, but concern will be high at head office level, especially as seasonal orders for Q4 this year may well be based on expected growth whereas the opposite is happening. #lidl’s growth of 9.1% remains impressive – in particular as they too are annualising against strong growth this time last year (16%). Their re-introduced ‘free bakery item’ offer (via the Lidl Plus App) was run throughout August – likely one reason for this further period of good performance. All eyes will be on the Christmas ranges being introduced over the next few weeks. I must be watching a lot of British television, because my first thought was, "This is absolutely brilliant!" I just stumbled upon this #TikTok account so I'm not exactly sure what's happening (see comments to watch video). It appears to juxtapose one type of web designer with another. One web designer seems to be effortlessly going through his workflow, singing, having a blast, while the other, perhaps more traditional programmer, seems to be stuck in misery. This one video has over 9M views, 800K likes... and is highly engaging for a number of reasons. 👉 Bad singing 👉 Good design 👉 Fast-paced 👉 Juxtaposition 👉 Linear narrative (we want to see how it turns out) I've watched a few of these and they seem to follow the same format - different designer each time, singing badly, while cruising through their workflow. Might this be an idea worth exploring for your business? I'm sure your solution is better, faster, more efficient than the alternative - what if you show a similar juxtaposition in a hilarious way? It's an easy way to: - give customers new ideas - offer value for money messages - bring ranges together across categories - include brands like Little Moons here This is a fundamental part of Greggs success.
