5 things you need to know about Health and Wellness in Asia Pacific! Last week, I had the privilege to represent NielsenIQ at Growth Asia Summit 2024, Asia’s biggest event for Food, Beverage and Nutrition. The 3 day event was held at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore with speakers and attendees coming from all around the globe. 🏥Health trends - The top concern for APAC Consumers is Increasing Food Prices whilst Health is #4. When we double click on health concerns we find that sleep is the top health concern in APAC, with mental health #2. Sleep and Mental Health related products are a huge opportunity to innovate, whilst managing the increase in prices and the pressure it puts on consumers also can help these concerns. 🏃‍♂️Sports Nutrition - Sports drinks are growing +9% in APAC and is growing as fast as +17% in Vietnam. 55% of APAC consumers claim to have gym/yoga/sports membership though 16% claim that they intend to decrease their gym spend in 2024. 🥚Protein trends - Eggs are the #1 means for APAC Consumers to get protein. We introduced the Eggquivalised index (yes that’s not a typo!) where we looked at the performance of different protein brands in APAC based on the amount of protein they contain but equivalised into eggs! As the average egg has 6g of protein, thus we looked at brands having from 1 egg’s worth of protein right through to those with 5 eggs’ worth of protein. 💡Innovation trends - In 11 out of 14 markets, “Improves Gut Health” is an unmet need for beverages with consumers stating that this of high importance but the current products available do not meet their needs. Microbiomes was a key area of interest with scientists, nutritionalists and academics supporting this insight by highlighting, at the Growth Asia summit, that this will become a huge area of growth in the next few years. ⌚️Technology trends - 89% of APAC consumers claim that they would change their consumer behaviour based on technology (wearables, DNA testing). Wearables with EDA (Electro Dermal Activity - to measure stress) are growing +77%. The rise in tech wearables will have a profound effect on changes in consumer behaviour, thus understanding these trends will be key for FMCG companies. Sugar and calorie reduction in the refreshing beverages market continues to be a leading criteria of choice for consumers and a major focus in product development and innovation 💡. In recent consumer analysis of sugar reduction and shopper behavior by Kerry found that long-term health and taste are deemed as crucial factors when looking at reduced sugar alternatives and consumers are not necessarily triggered to reduce sugar for weight loss alone, overall physical and mental health are critical considerations. Meanwhile, emotional states and eating occasions throughout the day are also intrinsically linked to sugar reduction and indulgent moments that consumers crave. Consumers today are open to sugar-reduced products, but want more options that offer the same taste and flavor experience 😋 as full sugar beverages.With so many priorities, consumers are hard pressed for time, so having a wide range of sugar-reduced products that help them meet their goals and offer the same taste experiences is important to them. Currently, taste is a barrier for consumers choice in reduced and zero sugar beverages, but it also creates an opportunity for taste led product innovation 💡 Kerry found that, generally, consumers are open to sugar reduction and zero sugar as long as there is a great flavor profile 😋 It is a very conscious market right now, and brand loyalty is also a loose concept, especially among younger consumers who are more adventurous and willing to try new things, that need their needs for taste and nutrition. My recent trip to Asia has me more interested in regional drinks and beverages market trends than ever 🍹 There was alot of conversation at Brew Asia about no/ low alcohol category across Asia too. One big thing I'm noticing is that consumers are getting more savvy and selective - while of course the big brands still dominate, an increasing number of wallets are going in search of options that are better value and better for consumer health. This is pretty true across the board in the Asia Pacific region. The other theme is the explosion of digital and how that's supporting the above trend by empowering buyers with more information and choice than ever before. 📈 A steadfast performance: Asia ends 2023 with #FMCG growth of 3.5% West and South Asia emerged as the primary catalysts of the region’s growth, both exhibiting double digit increases in value sales, while other territories within Asia are steadily finding their footing. Improverished consumers and what does it mean for #FMCG players? Personal savings rate hitting the all time low, while at the same time credit card debt is near all time high signals that consumers are poor and may be nearing their limits with unprecedented cost of living and assets inflation far outpacing their income growth (excl. top decile) Most of the FMCG players rely on a strong middle class, and the purchasing power of the bottom 90% of the consumers across the major economies got visibly poorer, as the vast majority of newly 'created' (printed) wealth got accumulated by the very rich (>66% of all the wealth 'printed' since 2020 ended up with the top 1%) that are unlikely to drastically increase their spend on CPG (how much more shampoo can Jeff Bezos buy?) If so far the price elasticity was low (low to no volume decline) it was driven by several forces that may well be about to expire, as many metrics are hitting the respective lows/ highs not seen since 2008/09 downturn Maintaining the pre-pandemics consumption will result tricky for many consumers. Being decisive: The HEINEKEN Company in Vietnam ⚫ Vietnam is one of its few 'power markets' for Heineken with (Western) Europe, Mexico, Nigeria, Brazil & South Africa ⚫ The Dutch giant has decided to “temporarily suspend” operations at one of its six breweries in Vietnam. ⚫ The move comes against a backdrop of declining beer sales in Vietnam (low double digit over the last 12 months) driven by regulatory issues (Decree 100 – a law that imposes stiff penalties on drink-driving) ⚫Additionally the special consumption Tax in Vietnam that is applied to beer is set to rise from the current level of 65% to 70-80% in 2026 and to 90-100% by 2030 Vietnam should however remain an important part of brewers' growth plans even if regulation is likely to dampen demand (especially with alcohol-free beer innovation where Heineken has extensive expertise and a wide portfolio) Another headwind for Heineken at a time: ⚫Volume development remains generally under pressure behind short-term (consumer purchasing power) & long-term (alcohol moderation) drivers ⚫Alcohol-free beer potential is unlikely to have mass adoption potential beyond helping gaining incremental share of occasions with current beer drinkers (not addressing non-beer drinkers barriers/ drivers at scale) ⚫Competition intensity keeps increasing in its key markets (cf. Consumer Trends: WARC Consumer Trends Report 2024 focuses on five trends that are top of mind for consumers. 1) Sustainable consumption - consumers prioritising sustainbility in purchase decisions,  approx 72% of consumers in Asia Pacific consider sustainability an important factor when choosing brands. Communicating brand effortst in using eco-friendly materials, reducing carbon footprints and sustainability are compelling messages for your customers! 2) Rise of multigenerational households - Economic pressures are leading to more multigenerational living arrangements, in Australia, 24% of full-time and stay-at-home parents live with their own parents, up from 15% in 2020. 3) AI is transforming the consumer purchase journey- offering personalisation and convenient shopping experiences. Over half (51%) of consumers in Asia Pacific use AI tools for price comparisons, and 72% are aware of generative AI in shopping experiences. 4) Resurgence of Live events- a strong demand for in-person experiences, including concerts and sports events. In Q1 2024, 16% of consumers in Asia Pacific purchased concert tickets, reflecting a growing interest in live events. 5) Health and Wellness continue in focus - Consumers are placing greater emphasis on health and wellness, seeking products and services that support their physical and mental well-being.

The recent news about the sugar content in Nestle baby food prompted me to comment on something I've felt for a long time Why do MNC's treat customers differently in emerging markets than those in developed markets? Having lived in the US for many years I've seen this first hand. Is it because customers in these markets are more demanding and aware of their rights? Is it because of the extreme competition in these markets? Some examples to prove my point - in my usual data driven way 1. Amazon in the USA has a much more liberal (almost unlimited) return policy whereas in India it's much more limited. I'm sure the justification will be that this is established by the brands on their platform 2. Jaguar cars in the USA (yes I had one) have a 5 year warranty whereas in India it's 3 years. Don't know if it's a reflection of the fact that Indians drive roughly or the roads are not as great. 3. You walk into a Macys and they'll pretty much take anything back. Rarely if ever do you find a store in India that'll do that 4. A restaurant (or a fast food chain) in the USA will take anything back no questions asked. Apple is a rare example of a company that has pretty uniform policies globally. I could go on and on but I think the point is made I'd welcome comments disproving this and suggestions #india #strategy #pricing #discrimination #marketing Amazon Apple JLR
