I don't often share links. But this is one for the ages and the future textbooks. Who here starts with their consumer? We like to think we do, but how often really? Whether you're a mature brand or a nascent one, your answer in how to get more people to buy, grow your business and have a successful exit if that's the goal, is to look. harder. at your consumer. 🧔 👋 The wine industry is panicking that the business seems to be systemically down. What they haven't done is truly start with the consumer. Like for real. Here's an example of someone who has. It's not something we don't know, it's just something most haven't done or may not be willing to do. Again, it all depends on who your consumer is and how you want your growth to come. And of course what your deep value prop is that you've (naturally ;) built for that consumer. What has Wonderwerk House of Fermentation done? They did exactly what we did when we built Apothic. In both cases, the key highlights are: ✅ Go to where the people are, don't wait for them to come to you. Are you waiting for consumers to trip over you, find you on a crowded shelf or drive to your tasting room? ✅ Innovate in flavors that are getting traction (or are coming) in your market. Many ways to find this out. What's hot in food? What's resonating in Erehwon? What does the changing population look like and gravitate toward? (in this case, diverse flavors reflecting cultural roots, flavor forward) ✅ Make it EASY to understand how to fit you into their lives. Your brand is unlikely to change their habits. How can your brand fit into the life they've already built? Think about their occasion you can affiliate with. Make it obvious to them, either in your name, package, content, etc. ✅ Create a world that people want to be part of. Don't just launch a new flavor. Build a world. ✅Focus on markets where the core target lives first ✅Work those markets, get out there, and teach people how to sell your brand. Using of course (this is my add) - a compelling brand narrative that thoroughly reflects your consumer and what is deeply true about you. As a summary, DON'T MAKE PEOPLE GUESS. Confused consumers don't buy. Confused buyers don't buy. Confused investors don't invest. Wine in particular has been too precious about many things. I am not saying everyone should start making jalapeno wine, but we have to start thinking in a fresh way if we want to grow this category into the future with a changing population base. Sneak Peek: US Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee says to eat more plants “In addition to recommending more plant-forward, nutrient-dense eating patterns overall, the committee specifically recommends updating the Dietary Guidelines so that plant-based sources of protein are listed before animal-based sources—a reprioritization in line with a trove of research linking animal protein with adverse health outcomes, including higher rates of Type 2 diabetes and early death.” “The recommended guidelines would also expand the number of plant-based foods considered to be “protein foods.” Under the current guidelines, the only plant foods categorized as such are soy products, nuts, and seeds. The new recommendation would add beans, peas, and lentils to this group, and list them, along with soy products, ahead of meat (including poultry), eggs, and seafood.” “(This) can help Americans maintain healthy weight, lower blood pressure, and improve heart health… Highlighting these foods is important because they are lower in saturated fat than meat, eggs, and seafood while also containing fiber, a nutrient of which many Americans are not eating enough.” Other highlights: - Emphasis on nutrient-dense, whole, less-processed forms - Less added sugars & saturated fat, and new sodium targets - Water as the drink of choice (not dairy) These recommendations come from a committee of 20 nutrition and public health experts following a scientifically rigorous, multi-year process examining the relationship between diet and health across all life stages, races, ethnicities, cultures, and socioeconomic status. When we talk about nutrition and health, we often hear about the importance of proteins. But what really does the heavy lifting are the smaller units that make up these proteins: amino acids. Interestingly, out of the 20 amino acids that are strung together in countless configurations to create the proteins our bodies need, there are nine that stand out as the VIPs of the group. These are the essential amino acids (EAAs), and they're dubbed "essential" for a good reason: our bodies can't make them on their own. We have to get them from the food we eat. 1. Histidine is like the multitasker of the group, involved in tissue repair and the production of histamine. Histamine gets a bad rap because of allergies, but it's also key for our immune response and even our wake-sleep cycle. You can find histidine in protein-rich foods like meats and seeds. 2. Isoleucine is one of the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). It's particularly important for muscle metabolism and is heavily concentrated in muscle tissue. Foods like eggs, cheese, and lentils are good sources. 3. Leucine, another BCAA, is the big boss of muscle protein synthesis. It tells your body to start building muscle. It's also involved in regulating blood sugar levels and healing wounds. Leucine is plentiful in soy, beef, and nuts. 4. Lysine does a lot of behind-the-scenes work. It's critical for producing hormones, enzymes, and antibodies. Plus, it helps in calcium absorption and collagen formation. To make sure you're getting enough lysine, include plenty of meat, eggs, and soy in your diet. 5. Methionine is a bit like the body's detox agent. It's involved in metabolism and detoxification. It's also necessary for absorbing important minerals like zinc and selenium. You'll find methionine in eggs, grains, and seeds. 6. Phenylalanine is a precursor for several neurotransmitters, including dopamine and epinephrine. These are critical for brain function and mood regulation. Dairy products and meats are great sources of phenylalanine. 7. Threonine is a supporter of the central nervous system, the immune system, and liver function. It also helps keep the fat off your liver. Lean meats, dairy, and nuts are some threonine-rich foods. 8. Tryptophan is often associated with feeling sleepy after a big meal, thanks to its role in producing serotonin. But it does so much more, including helping produce niacin, which is essential in creating ATP – the energy currency of the cell. You can find tryptophan in eggs, chocolate, oats, etc. 9. Valine, the third BCAA, promotes muscle growth and helps with energy production. It's present in dairy, grains, and, of course, meats. In essence, think of essential amino acids as the all-stars of your body's nutritional needs. The USDA’s 2025 Dietary Guidelines will be released this December, but early reports reveal that recommendations to reduce ultra-processed foods have been delayed—again—due to a “lack of evidence.” After more than 30 years of advocating for change, with a wealth of research to back it up, this decision is not just disheartening—it’s dangerous. Ultra-processed foods are driving chronic disease and mental illness. Ozempic/ Wegovy “miracle diet drug” users - an emerging opportunity for FMCG? A recent YouGov survey shows that 60.3% of Americans are actively seeking weight loss solutions, propelling the popularity of the latest entrant - Semaglutide. Originally designed to treat type 2 diabetes, semaglutide is the drug in brands such Wegovy, Rybelsus, and Ozempic. When Ozempic started trending on TikTok in January 2023, only 35.1% of Americans had ever heard of the drug. But now after a year of media virality, celebrity associations (Elon Musk, Amy Schumer),  and skepticism about safety, more than half (57.9%) of Americans have now heard of semaglutide and (38%) would be willing to give it a shot if prescribed. J.P. Morgan predicts that total GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) users in the U.S. could reach 30 million by 2030, around 9% of the population. Research has it that these weight loss drugs may not only suppress appetites but also lower grocery spending on categories (snacks, soft drinks, high-carb products etc.). FMCG Leaders like Nestlé are combatting this change in eating preferences by announcing Vital Pursuit, a new line of frozen portioned meals targeted at Ozempic/ Wegovy users. GNC plans to add a dedicated section in its 2,300 US stores with vitamins, protein shakes, and supplements tailored to this audience. Denver-based Simply Good Foods seeks to revitalize its low-carb diet brand Atkins in the next 12 to 18 months to meet the rising demand of these drug users. The question arises: How is this audience currently spending on existing offerings of lean cuisines, meal kits, and healthy snacks/beverages? Are these not enough to suffice the needs of Ozempic/ Wegovy users, or is a more targeted product promotional push required? "But Plant Proteins are incomplete protein..." There are varying amounts of each of the amino acids in different sources of proteins, called The Amino Acid Profile (AAP). 2. Plant Proteins are generally lower in Lysine, except for beans so it was thought that you had to combine foods (beans and grains) to reach sufficient amounts in a meal. 3. We now know, the total amount of EAA's PER DAY, not PER MEAL are what is important, making food combining irrelevant if you are consuming sufficient daily protein. 4. In the graph below you can see that by consuming 60g of protein per day - regardless of the source of protein - you will meet 100% RDI for all EAA's for the average adult (protein requirements vary based upon activity, gender, age, etc.). Just don't choose to eat nuts as your only source of food, or consume 70g/day lol. 5. This is only 20g Plant Protein per meal, 3 times per day.
