Research Spotlight Wednesday! Today, we shine a light on the work of Ted Baker now the Zone Scout Coordinator at Sheffield United Football Club. Ted’s background in scouting, recruitment, and coaching within U9-16 academy football inspired his research project: “Exploring the Scouting Landscape in English Football Academies: Key Insights and Value.” Ted’s study delves into the current scouting environment across professional football academies in England, drawing on data from 71 scouts. Here are some key findings: Diverse Roles: Among the participants, 31% are full-time, 42.3% part-time, and 26.8% volunteers. Category One scouts were the most represented group at 45.1%. Volunteer Involvement: Volunteers play a crucial role but often feel isolated, with 50% in Category Three reporting insufficient feedback or communication from clubs. Trust & Feedback: Trust is paramount, with 87% of respondents rating it as “essential” or “very important.” However, 73.7% of volunteers reported receiving no feedback from coaches. Communication Gaps: Improved communication is needed; 66.2% of scouts emphasised the importance of relationships, yet formal channels are rare, especially for volunteers. Motivations: Unselfishness drives many scouts, with nearly 50% prioritising “developing children” over financial gain. Knowledge Transfer: The study highlights a lack of CPD opportunities for volunteers, with 42.11% reporting none, underscoring the need for structured knowledge-sharing mechanisms. Standardisation Challenges: While 56.4% supported standardised performance measures, resistance from full-time scouts indicates a need for trust and transparency. These findings highlight critical areas for improvement in how clubs manage and interact with their scouting staff, ultimately enhancing recruitment processes and talent identification. By addressing these issues, we can foster a more supportive and inclusive environment for scouts at all levels, leading to long-term success on the field. Championing a Winning Culture in Football During my time working with Ange Postecoglou at club level, where we clinched back-to-back national titles, Ange fostered a culture of unwavering excellence. He expected commitment to a winning mentality from everyone involved—be it players, staff, board members, fans, sponsors, or support personnel. This ethos promotes a positive, forward-thinking environment that propels everyone toward an ultimate collective goal of supreme success. Yet, this drive contrasts starkly with instances in recent days at Spurs where fans preferred their team to lose to prevent a rival, like Arsenal, from winning the title. Choosing this over maintaining hopes for a Champions League spot not only undermines a winning culture but also highlights a deeper systemic issue at Spurs. A genuine passion for football should encourage striving for victory in every match, elevating the club's ambitions rather than compromising them. Ange’s reaction is very typical and understandable. He wants to be surrounded by winners who don’t compromise on the bigger picture. #FootballCulture #WinningMentality

And many clubs will need to improve their finances and governance to comply. Let’s talk PE & Sports Premium Funding 💰 As we enter the final term of the academic year, we know teachers across the country will be looking into and trying to finalise their budgets for the upcoming academic year, not least that budget allocated for PE & Sports Premium. This initiative introduced in 2013 has been a huge success and allowed children throughout the UK to access a whole range of sporting activities! The DfE has identified 5 key priorities for the funding to be spent on:   1️⃣ To increase staff confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport 2️⃣ To increase the engagement of all pupils in physical activity 3️⃣ To raise the profile of PE and sport across the school 4️⃣ To broaden the range of sports and physical activities, pupils receive 5️⃣ To increase competitive sport participation However, many PE Coordinators fall into the trap of heavily allocating the majority of these funds towards re-stocking or upgrading sports equipment. Whilst on face value this may seem beneficial, throughout the course of an academic year this is not always the most sustainable way and can prove more costly in the long run.
