"Get busy living, Get busy dying" 💭 This time last year I was in the process of interviewing for my new role as Head of Learning & Development for Domis Construction. ✍ Reflecting on my previous job, it was safe, secure and comfortable but eventually when a trajectory starts to slow down we all have a choice to make. It's been a while since I've watched Shawshank Redemption but I recall the line in my head that was driving my decision at the time was "Get busy living, Get busy dying". 🔨 🏗 The construction industry wasn't something I actively pursued, but once I learnt more about the company and spoke with the Directors it was clear that what set Domis apart was the culture and desire to be the best. Domis do things differently and the output is world class. 🌍 💯 I believe that growth happens outside your comfort zone. In my experience, the best things can happen when you trust in your ability and back yourself to succeed. I was open to learning and focused on where I could add value. Seek first to understand. I've been lucky enough to have support from and work with some brilliant colleagues since joining and have been been able to: 📌 Redesign and deliver the Group Onboarding to do justice to the company and shape new starter journeys for the better 💰 Improve training cost efficiencies across the group by centralising our approach which also fosters cross-group understanding and collaboration 🎓 Create more engaging learning experiences through identifying core partners and working together to create interactive sessions (Thanks to our partners at 3B Training) 📈 Increase core competencies across the group by 40% to ensure colleagues have the right skills to deliver and develop in their roles 📱Digitise our site induction process to reduce time to induct and increase productivity whilst reinforcing standards and behaviours 👷‍♂️ Shape our apprenticeship scheme to nurture talent and provide pathways and learning opportunities to strengthen our talent pipeline With a brand new head office soon to be ready (equipped with gym, sauna, free canteen, games room and more!) there's never been a better time to be on the Domis journey. 🏢 🏋‍♂️ 🎮 Oh, and the fact that we're currently delivering world class projects and have the largest high-rise residential build in Europe in our pipeline only adds to the excitement 🎯 Engagement is always high, off to the races in June 🏇 but this week it's the Domis World Cup ⚽ where our group and partners come together for an annual 5 a side tournament. Apparently it can get a bit tasty so I'll have to find my shin pads 🤣 Don't settle and find an environment where you can 'Get busy living' ✅

🤔 What did you do at the weekend?? My weekend consisted of decorating 🤦 Decorating is something I've always approached with reluctance and resentment. I'm not very good at it and I find it about as interesting as.. well… watching paint dry 🙈 Whenever anyone told me they enjoy it, I thought they'd clearly taken quite a significant blow to the head 🤦🫣 Most of my DIY decorating efforts have ended in a significant contribution to the ‘swear’ jar and paint spillages. It turns out you can cry over spilled paint 😢 🧐 However recently I have taken a different approach. I remembered something that I had read. The idea is that when presented with a difficult or ‘boring’ task, we should ask ourselves ‘what can this teach me?’ 🤔 So I did, I asked myself ‘what can decorating teach me?’ 💭 Once I got past my first initial thought of ‘this can teach me that I absolutely hate decorating’ I came across a pearl of wisdom. This can teach me patience. Patience is the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious. 🙏Patience is something I have struggled with in the past and still do from time to time but this new approach has allowed me to understand that things take time. There are steps that have to be completed before the next one can begin. Some things need to be left before you continue to work on them. 🙌 This understanding helps to alleviate anxiety and helps promote a healthier and clearer thought process. From an Interviewer’s Perspective… 💡 This week, I have been conducting interviews for the Business Support Administrator position at Off Mains Solutions. When chatting with friends and family, many have wished me ‘good luck’ before the interviews. This struck me, as I am not the one applying for a prospective new role. I’ve interviewed many people before and do not recall being wished good luck beforehand. Then I realised that, actually, it’s a sign of how the employment dynamic has shifted since I first started hiring people only 5-6 years ago. In today’s job market, job interviews have evolved into a two-way performance of representation. Both parties are under equal pressure to impress, with hopes that the success of the interview process will lead to a perfectly matched collaboration of expertise. Beyond evaluating skills, my role as the hiring manager is to showcase why our company stands out as a great place to work. Highlighting our values, mission, and culture is crucial in attracting top talent amidst multiple offers. Fostering a respectful and conversational atmosphere during interviews promotes openness and mutual understanding. This approach allows both parties to assess the compatibility and alignment of values. For candidates, interviews serve as a window to explore our company’s perks, work-life balance, and growth opportunities, enabling informed decisions. By embracing the interactive nature of interviews, we aim to attract dedicated individuals who resonate with our vision. Personal anecdotes and genuine interactions during interviews help candidates envision their potential role within the team, facilitating well-informed decisions about their future at our company. Sometimes negative posts about the service help to sort out the issue. So, this one is about O2 (Telefónica UK) and their ridiculously poor service during switching to a new billing system. On April 30th I received an email saying that new billing system was there and I needed urgently to contact O2 to discuss my options and in case they didn’t hear from me in 30days my sim and mobile number would stop working. I called them (I believe it’s dedicated Purple Client support line) the same day, and after nearly 2h on line new account and contract were created in new billing system for a new (temporary) number, so my current number could be migrated there. Process/operational Issue: having all my details, they could simply preset new account with new temporary number and just send me email to create a password, login, choose new tariff (or ideally no changes at all there) and set up direct debit. Would save plenty of time. But no, they didn’t look for easy solution. After logging into new account I noticed that there is a message there “you have esim ready to be installed”. Well, it’s for my apple watch I thought. After a couple of weeks of nothing happening, I called that dedicated help line again, and another consultant said that no number swap had been set up before, so they requested a number migration. However, it still was planned to migrate on new esim, which I can’t use, as esim has been already used with a number I must keep. So, the consultant ordered a new physical sim for me and delayed number migration well after the latest ETA for sim delivery. Guess what? After all latest ETA passed nothing happened. My old sim was still working with my number, though I’d already paid a first bill for my new contract with temporary number… I called again. Another consultant said that there was no number migration requested, took all details, serial number of the new physical sim and ensured me that finally within 24h my number will be on a new sim, I didn’t need to do anything but wait once my old sim stops working and install new sim… That was on Monday. My old sim is still working, I’ve been told today that in case I decide to leave and cancel new contact with temp number I never used I’ll be in charge of early break fees…. But even then, when I went to EE shop, I couldn’t get PAC to keep my number. By the way, 30th day mentioned in original email is tomorrow. Are there any lawyers who want to take O2 (Telefónica UK) to the court if after tomorrow I loose my number? And another joke: earlier this week I received same email regarding the new billing and disconnection of service for my new temporary number which is in new billing system. I have no other ideas rather they hired clowns. If anybody here can transfer it to O2 management, I believe, they should know how things really are, as I’m sure the report of transfer to new billing would be more than positive! And please, change the music. That boring jazz is annoying!

Interview feedback is SO SO SO important!! I just spoke to a top level candidate who doesn't want to go to an interview with one of my clients because one of her friends didn't get interview feedback from them 6 MONTHS AGO! It just goes to show - people don't forget a bad service. If your business recruits heavily, make sure you treat the talent market the right way, otherwise the market may come back to bite you in the backside! #recruitment #construction #interview

The reality of recruitment is not "just going on job boards and scatter gunning CV's to clients". If that's your experience of a recruiter, look for a new one. It's not an easy job and it certainly isn't for everyone. Those who do it properly have worked hard, made lots of mistakes, and importantly, have learned through those mistakes. It doesn't happen overnight. The hours, especially in the first 2 years, can be long and often require you to take calls out of hours on weekends and holidays. 📱 The work, whilst not physical like some jobs, is mentally taxing and very stressful at times. 🤯 Getting the balance between servicing your clients and ensuring your candidates are okay takes time and effort, it's easy to get it wrong even when you work hard to get it right. ❌ But this isn't a message to say "poor recruiters" we LOVE our job. We choose to do these things because we want to get it right and be successful. 💪 We'll make hundreds of cold calls to find someone the right job. We'll travel to meet our clients to ensure we know their business properly, see where they work and understand what type of person would fit in. We commit to you. We want to help. If you're looking for an agency to partner with then look for one that wants to truly build a relationship with you. Look for one that goes out of their way to understand you or your business properly. My team and I take immense pride from making a positive impact on candidates and clients and will go out of our way to help give you the service you require. The best relationships we have are those where collaboration exists, where communication is constant and feedback is prompt - both ways. This is where results are best and people get what they want more regularly.
