I went from #government into the #highered sector because in my 16 years abroad I saw first-hand the positive impact of the UK’s #universities as a force for good. But so much of that impact was in the #softpower realm - the affection of overseas leaders and titans of industry proud to hold a British degree. The entrepreneurial spirit of passionate U.K. grads determined to get their #startups and #NGOs off the ground even in the toughest circumstances. And the undeniable association between the U.K. and quality education, a link as strong in the minds of many as with Peppa Pig, Peter Rabbit or William Shakespeare. Articulating the #economic impact of our sector - the jobs #created, the partnerships with #business, the #research and #innovation breakthroughs - we’ve not been so good at this. But we have to be. We were the OG #data-driven institutions. Showing our value - in nickels and dimes - isn’t gauche self-promotion. It’s necessary for survival and future growth. Bravo, Universities UK!

Did you know between 2014 and 2022, LSBU was the largest European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded higher education provider of business innovation support programmes in London? LSBU supported 740 small and medium sized businesses in health tech, low carbon etc across seven ERDF programmes worth over £15 million and supported over 250 new products being brought to market. The British Council launched case studies on its international collaboration grants program, looking at how the cultural relations approach helps achieve a positive and successful international collaboration and relationship. 🎨 What is cultural relations? According to British Council’s study, cultural relations are “reciprocal transnational interactions between cultures, which lead to outcomes such as greater connectivity, better mutual understanding, more and deeper relationships, mutually beneficial transactions and enhanced sustainable dialogue between people and cultures.” “Pursuing fairness or equality in international partnerships is at the core of the cultural relations approach and these principles are also what make the cultural relations approach innovative.” While more and more countries put their emphasis on cultural diplomacy, the UK and its signature cultural agency British Council has adopted “cultural relations” as the main principle of their overseas cultural exchange actions. The most significant distinct of this innovative approach lies in the pursuit of fairness and equality in partnerships. 🌎 What’s different between cultural relations and cultural diplomacy? Cultural diplomacy sometimes emphasizes more on the fulfillment of national interests and the use of art and culture as a method to address transnational issues. Cultural relations puts more focus on genuine reciprocity and mutual understanding, treating art and culture as primary ends in themselves. That is, the richness of cultural exchange in partnerships is the main purpose of cultural relations. In terms of US public diplomacy, the State Department has been trying to embed its educational and cultural exchange program in the broad national strategy, whose underlying logic leans more toward cultural diplomacy, rather than cultural relations. However, those organizations that implement these programs such as Fulbright Scholarship actually accomplish their mission with the idea of equality, reciprocity and mutual understanding, which resonates with the cultural relations approach proposed by the British Council. While the two ideas contribute to different sectors in different tasks, they are both important in public diplomacy. We believe the discussion of difference between cultural relations and cultural diplomacy is significantly useful for practitioners in the fields of cultural exchange, arts management, and public diplomacy. Universities UK commissioned London Economics Ltd to assess the impact of UK HE institutions. It is compelling stuff - especially when you take the ratios of HEIs to output in the regions into account. NE killing it (as always). I've sat in presentations where people talked about the low performance of regions without even going into the actual figures. This one give a bit more detail. And yes, lies, damned lies etc...
