Student-athletes have a unique career path that is closely tied to their scholarships. Often, their focus is largely on the field or court and less so on their academic pursuits. However, it is important for student-athletes to consider their academic goals and passions when choosing a college or university to attend. Before committing to a school, I advise asking the right questions of college recruiters and carefully examining the majors and programs on offer. Even if a student-athlete redshirts their freshman year, if they are not studying a subject that truly excites them, it can impact their performance on the field as well as their future career success.

I was part of a scholarship interview panel today. What it left me with a mix of emotions. Excited to see passionate students wanting to upskill, but also disheartened to see university graduates applying for a diploma seemingly unrelated to their degrees Why? The answer they gave was all too common: "Can't find a job, won't be eligible for government positions for years". 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤. Here's my challenge to universities and departments: 𝐋𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬! ️ Students graduate with valuable degrees, but are they truly equipped with the knowledge of all the exciting career options their field offers? Wouldn't it be empowering for them to know they can create their own ventures, be their own bosses, from day one? Do College Rankings Matter? 🎓🤔 When it comes to choosing a college, rankings can be an interesting factor to consider—but how much do they actually matter? While rankings offer insights into things like reputation, faculty quality, and resources , they don’t tell the whole story. For many students, factors like campus culture, program fit, location, and networking opportunities are even more crucial. A highly ranked school may not necessarily be the best fit for everyone! Instead, focusing on personal goals, academic strengths, and long-term career plans can lead to a college experience that truly feels right.

Dear All, For those of us who have had the fortune of receiving a good education and establishing successful careers, it is our responsibility to guide and empower young candidates as they make crucial decisions about their futures. One of the most significant choices they will face is selecting a course of study when joining university. It is essential to emphasize the importance of seeking professional guidance during this process. Reflecting on my own experiences, I have come to understand that choosing an undergraduate course should not be done in isolation. Instead, it should involve careful consideration of one’s passions and future career goals, with the input of knowledgeable advisors. Professional guidance can provide valuable insights that align one's interests with viable career paths, helping to ensure a fulfilling and successful future. I wish I had possessed this knowledge earlier in my journey. The right advice at the right time could have made a significant difference in aligning my educational choices with my career aspirations from the outset. Let us ensure that the next generation benefits from our experiences by actively supporting them in making informed decisions about their education and careers.
